The Warsaw Uprising was a major World War II resistance effort by the Polish Home Army (Armia Krajowa) against the German occupation of Warsaw. It began on August 1, 1944, with the aim of liberating the city before the arrival of the Soviet Red Army, but ultimately failed after 63 days of intense fighting, resulting in the near-total destruction of the city by German forces.
