On December 7, 1941, Japan launched a surprise attack on the US naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, resulting in the deaths of over 2,400 Americans and the destruction of numerous ships and aircraft. The attack, which aimed to cripple the US Pacific Fleet and buy Japan time for expansion in Southeast Asia, ultimately pushed the United States into World War II. While the attack caused significant damage, it failed to destroy all US carriers and repair facilities, which would prove crucial in the subsequent war effort.

The attack began with a wave of Japanese planes striking airfields and battleships in the harbor, followed by a second wave of bombers. Several battleships, including the USS Arizona, were sunk or heavily damaged. Aircraft on the island were also destroyed. The surprise attack prompted a declaration of war by the United States, marking the country’s entry into World War II. While the attack was a tactical success for Japan, it ultimately backfired by galvanizing American public opinion and fueling the resolve to fight back.
