The bombing of Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, was the second and last time an atomic bomb was used in warfare. The U.S. dropped a plutonium bomb, nicknamed “Fat Man,” on the city, resulting in tens of thousands of immediate deaths and widespread destruction. The blast, equivalent to 22,000 tons of TNT, vaporized people near the hypocenter and caused severe burns and radiation sickness further out. The attack, along with the bombing of Hiroshima three days prior, contributed to Japan’s surrender and the end of World War II.
