The Liberation of Paris in World War II, on August 25, 1944, marked the end of over four years of Nazi occupation. Following a French Resistance uprising and the approach of Allied forces, including the French 2nd Armored Division and the US 4th Infantry Division, the German military governor, General Dietrich von Choltitz, surrendered, defying Hitler’s order to destroy the city. This event was a major morale boost for the Allies and a symbol of France regaining its freedom and sovereignty, with General Charles de Gaulle leading a liberation march through the city.
