The Winter War was a conflict fought between the Soviet Union and Finland from November 1939 to March 1940. Triggered by Soviet demands for Finnish territory to protect Leningrad, the war saw Finland mount a surprisingly strong defense against a larger Soviet force. Despite ultimately ceding territory in the Treaty of Moscow, Finland’s resistance garnered international sympathy and respect.
