How Did I Do This?

Well, I played a IGN battlecruiser mission (German patched version), and I managed to get some targets:

You should be able to understand this even if you don't know any German - I destroyed a bomber (=aircraft) with my 15in guns eh: Well, all I did was an 'ENGAGE' order - and the AI started firing everything it had at the poor plane... 5in, 15in, AA guns. Even more interesting: The AI only did this when I ordered 'stand down'. As soon as I ordered 'Defend Deck guns' the 15in stopped firing at the plane

Scary.

Well, at least I did a proper job and blasted the plane to dust eh: enigma!:

The difference from "Engage" & "Defend DeckGuns" is that "Engage" takes on the closest target (air or sea), or the target youre aiming at with your Bi'nocs, where "Defend...." takes on the closest sea target
OK, no problem with that, but why does the AI attack an aircraft with 15in guns? It doesn't make any sense at all...

or...our former AI programmer didn't distinguish between a 4" AA gun and a non-AA version.
OK, no problem with that either, but, to be honest, I have never heard of 15in AA guns :D

It's not a serious problem, and watching the main guns following the circling plane was quite some show to watch  ;) wave:

I have read of cases where heavy guns on ships could be used as AA guns against low flying torpedo planes by trying to fire in front of the oncoming planes and catching them in the shell splash. Although that may just be another delusion of my fevered brain crazy: ...........time for another beer. buxton:

That's right, AND, main deck guns often fired shells with proximity fuses to attack large aerial formations. And what of the RN Dido-class AA-cruisers?
This is right for guns up to 6in caliber (15cm), but it won't make any sense for big guns (11in and up). Their shells were far too heavy to be fired high into the air and would have lost momentum long before they could have reached any point near aircraft swarms, and these guns were firing too slow to be capable of AA-Defense. Large caliber guns like main batteries on pocket battle ships, battle cruisers and battleships were solely Anti Ground artillery, and I doubt that 8in guns on heavy cruisers would have been capable of AA gunning.

Dido class, btw, carried either eight 5.25in guns and one 4in gun (first group), ten 5.25in guns (second group) or nine 4.5in guns and one 4in guns (third group), and even then the 4.5in was far better suited to the main task (AA - Defense) than the 5.25in.

In WWII German warships were equipped with several types of AA guns, mainly 20mm and 37mm, some 88mm, but even some very heavy 105mm AA guns, but during the war the latter proved to be more or less ineffective for the reasons given above: Too slow in firing, unable to reach high altitudes.
