Apologies for the bump, but what of making a ships crew only visible to the captain of that ship?

So as captain you can see sailors at the AA cannons and such, rather than posessed weapons, but other vessels appear as they do now.

I should think this would not only solve the problem of killing people with AA cannons but also improve performance, as the engine would not strain to generate little polygonal people all over every ship in the area. After all, if you're close enough to an enemy ship to look for tiny people, you should probably be already sinking.

Vaarok, that's a good idea. During the patch testing we had put mostly transparent still figures inside the submarine at stations, but it just doesn't work unless the are animated and interact. We don't have the staff or budget to implement it yet, but rest assured it is in Enigma's future.

Honestly, I don't care a thing about seeing my crewmembers. They would only block the view.

This is a naval game, a ship battle. There's no point in wasting resources and BW to show some funny puppets firing my AAs. I like the view and I love to see the guns trying to track targets.

How many people would you have to place on the deck to make it look realistic? What about gun hits? Would people get hurt or die? This is no sim, this is tactical game with lots of action.

Hi guys just 2 cents worth.

I would hate to see crews in teh MP version, as well as heaps of other things why?

LAG Inducers.

You wanna play hard and fast on MP and for me that means best possible connection. Too much comming down and going up will affect ingame experiance.

But thats just me :)

I agree there should be visible crews onboard ships, I also agree with it possibly changing the rating showing the crews on the decks of ships would only increase the realism not the rating if you don't show the crew people wil go on thinking no person every really did anything on ships or got hurt or killed in battle it just gives an absence of realism related to the world today and people wouldthink wrong of it.

I'm in the 'people belong on the ships' camp. Why? Because it actually played a very pivotal part of tactics in WW II. Subs were much more effective surface raiders than they are in the game. They would surface near a merchant and commence to machine gun the decks, scattering the crew. That way the merchant couldn't man the main guns and sink the submarine outright. Obviously that would give some advantage to ships with turreted, enclosed or shielded gun positions, but that would just be one of the considerations that would have to be weighed by the DEVs.

Yeah, I also like the specific damage idea. The one where if the No 2 turret takes a 5? shell and either slows down quite a bit or just fails all together.

::Shrug:: Overall, though I?m happy with the game as it is and wouldn?t have a problem playing it in its current state for several years now

I agree with the devs in terms of not having crew damage, and I don't really know about the value of subsystem damage to ships given the heaving of waves and AI gunnery, but I think seeing your little peoples run for the conning tower during a Prep For Dive order alone would completely justify the addition in my eyes.

The twenty-second countdown is realistic and a good balancing thing, but it feels artificial when you're sitting there on the conning tower for twenty seconds while your guns are silent, and then suddenly you're able to submerge. Seeing it take twenty seconds for all the deck crew to climb inside would be a good thing, if it could be done. Though I'd not envy the animators.

Though the poltergeist AA does also still vaguely bother me...

I'm in the "against" camp.

RogueRKn raises good points about lag inducement, and blase is on the mark about "wasting resources" and this being a ship to ship battle game.

Also, why would anyone want to compromise the high standard of the visual aspect of this game, by dragging in pathetic cartoon figures to cavort around the place?

Imagine the awful jolt back to reality, when having been on the Tac Periscope for some minutes, slugging through a toe to toe with a couple of DDs, you order "Down Tactical" and find yourself standing in the middle of a comic-strip 😵

For me, that's "A Patch Too Far"
