E:D - The game

Can do. It's just that group play will be difficult because of the vastness of the universe. 400 billion systems for you to visit. So if one pilot want to go explore and regroup after another player comes online will be tough if he has to fly back towards a staging point. I have been exploring alot and making money selling my data in stations. I have been interdicted a few times and avoided them all but one, and even that one I escaped from while under fire. So when you are flying in lawless systems, you can still have fun without being ganged all the time. Let's see what the future brings.

I have seen video's from the guy, f.i. talking joysticks. He comes over quite negatively. He does give his personal opinion but he does not leave alot of room for why some of his negatives points are positive for you. The fact that he mentions Minecraft instead of Space Engineers also shows that he could have done better research before making a video. Sandbox games aren't by definition craft games. There are alot of levels of sandbox games.

Important to understand is that there is a nice mechanic about power distribution, silent running, heat, etc... Also for targeting enemies or NPC's. You can shoot different modules (drive, power, life support, ...) or attach a cargo breacher so the hatch of your target blows and vents the cargo. You will not get a bounty for doing so. You will if you shoot the cargo hatch.
Every mount you put on a ship adds weight and reduces your jump distance. Very important if you accept a hauling mission, look at the map and notice you can make the jump, only to put an extra scanner on it afterwards or a gun, and your mass is too big to make the jump.

The fact is that you need some skills to fly a spaceship. The physics are as close as they get to the real thing, without spoiling the fun.

Try not to read too many forums, because people want things that will fit their play style and ruin things for others.

Trading will make you alot of money exponentially. The first amounts of money stack up really really slowly. But once you make money, buy a ship with a bigger cargo, choose your routes well you can make alot of money. More than you can with bounty hunting.

I have made my first 200000 in one week with a combination of trading and exploring. Carrying cargo is a risk, carrying exploration data is not. You can even sell it after your ship is destroyed.

If you want to mine, you have to find (explore) rare belts near rare suns. They have rare ores and they will give you plenty of money.

Piracy is a very personal choice. You can kill clean NPC's or clean players, up to you. Yo will get a bad standing with factions you shoot at or get killed by bounty hunters. Only for ace pilots.

A huge tip. Don't forget to request docking every time. I have forgotten it and if you don't leave the station in time after getting a fine, you get blown up. Keep your wits about it.
An outpost can be full, so repeat the docking request.
For both procedures, pick the right spot or get a fine for loitering.
