Air Boss' skills got me thinking...

I do this alot. When some one is coming up at you, DONT DIVE. Then when you notice that the distance counter starts reeling to show you are gaining distance, flaps on, throttle down, brakes, maybe even gear and nose back or to side. You may end up finding him running, trying to get leveled RIGHT BENEATH YOU which will give you one of the easiest shots, or one of your team mates picking him up. I think it's safer to climb up with the person(do not take this literal, I mean if he coming up, you go up stay away). Reason is:

1) You are at a higher altitude already and he shouldnt be able to catch you if you kept your speed up,

2) Diving is pretty much a head-to-head and in those fights you may damage him badly but you may also end up in bad shape yourself and in some cases, shot down,

3) You maintain you altitude advantage instead of blowing through, getting damaged and now be low and slow enough for his back-up to take you out.

This is why I almost never climb up to engage some one right above me, I usually change it around and wait for him to dive on me so I dive down and hopefully some one takes him out before I get killed, if not I just drag it out as long as I can. Oh and Bf-109K4 is one of the best planes to use this because of its climb rate and be careful when trying to use it AGAINST them, you might get nipped in the butt by one of them 30mm cannon shells

EDIT:

Forgot to mention the speed that the distance counter number raises varies. Try it and determine what is the best for your situation. (Is he stalled? Maybe a few more seconds....how about now?)
