I was about to say "Someone who knows", but your doubt made me google some supporting evidence, and I couldn't find any!

I did see that there are virii that attack firmware of DVD players, but as for IDE drives, I see only evidence of the rumour.

Well I am more curious to read about it than I am doubting, Ive never heard of such damage caused by malicious software, to any kind of hardware, CPU/chipset,HD,CD,DVD,etc. But just cause I havent heard about it doesnt mean they arent out there. I guess its kinda the same with trolls, monsters, ghosts and aliens, just cause I havent met any doesnt mean they arent walking among us
