I still retain my comments about the nearly impossible odds in winning this mission the first time you play it. In RL, no captain would take such absurd odds.
Guess you never met Cap Bux and Cap Jesper

Game or RealLife doesnt matter, risky or not, we push the limit :)

Well, I'm not from TAG but here's my opinion for what its worth.

Sinking ships in ERT is much easier than in RL. For example, tubes reload faster, you don't have critical systems damage, you can't be blown to the surface by a depth charge, there are no dud torpedos (although many of mine seem to run underneath the target...) - you get my drift. Also, whilst the AI is good, it is still only AI and therfore can be predictable.

To counter this advantage in your favour, you are faced with less real-life challenges, viz. number of enemy ships. In this particular mission, the real goal is to be able to make maximum speed towards the oiler whilst conserving the vital resources of batteries and torpedos (or being sunk!)

Yes, but even though the game is not that realistic, some of us players appreciate a fair challenge.

That means that the first time the mission is played, there's a minimally reasonable possibility of figuring out a tactic in real time gameplay without previously resorting to a walkthrough.

The chances of someone playing this mission the first time and using your method are miniscule.

And using my method of downling them all might be the standard strategy players will employ but here, too, the odds of tackling every ship you're attacked by are also very small.

All I'm saying is that "insane" or "extreme" level missions should be marked as such and not be made part of a standard supposedly playable campaign, impeding a player's chances of moving on.

As far as I recall - and it is some time back - I got through most of the USA sub missions first try. Can't recall this mission in particular, though I did manage first try when I did the above walkthrough a couple of days ago. And I figured that out in real time - I mostly don't like to follow other folk's guides

I do actually remember thinking the USA missions mostly seemed easier than the other two factions (but then, I had completed the other two factions first so I had a fair bit of sea-time under my belt).

I grant you, this is not an easy mission, but it is by no means extreme. Some of the surface missions, on the other hand, I would regard as bordering on the extreme!

I must stress that this is only my experience. Some people find some aspects of the game easier or harder than others. TAG did a trial at a local school once and there was one little girl who could take out a ship at max torpedo range every time - the AI programmer was most humbled!

Now I can't hit a barn door at 10 paces, so my main trouble is being so close my torpedos go under the target. However, I'm pretty good at knowing when to duck, dive, sneak, pop-up and let the buggers have it where they least expect it. I don't see more escorts as a threat, I see them as somewhere between an irritation and a bonus score ;)

Practical advice? What I did when I got stuck on and frustrated by a mission was to play another faction, or surface instead of sub, or a patrol mission. After awhile I'd come back to the "impossible" mission and I'd usually crack it. The only mission I *really* struggled on was the MTB versus sub mission - I only got through that with excessive use of outside view and the pause key.

I can't get your method to work, Jesper. Image
This is very unrealistic - one sub against a slew of CVs, DDs and DEs.

I manage to get the first CV, then at some point, I'm encircled by everyone else. I wind up with sinking everything except two DEs but with only two torps left and my batteries dead.

After taking a few charges, I surfaced for air (almost none left) and was finished off by deck guns. Image

I want to move on but this one's got me stuck. Yes, I'm playing on the hardest difficulty level. Maybe I should change it to the easiest just to get past it? eh: How depressing! Image
If the game was realistic, it would be very boring. In real life, it would be you against a single, competent ASW ship. Here's the reasons the game developers did not do that:

1. Keeping with the arcade style of the game, it would be boring to just kill one ship per mission. Each mission would last like 30 seconds. Think of an FPS game were you only faced one enemy for the entire game, like it is in real life.

2. The AI is very, very, very stupid in almost all games. It takes a lot of AI players to even the odds. It was hard in real life, too, you know.

I'm seriously hoping that someone from TAG will comment about the issue of realistic odds in missions like this.
Dude, they are making up fake designs for ships which would have never been considered under any circumstances in real life, I doubt you will achive much with your call for realism ;)
