Skippers Guide To Depth Charging

Thanks . I will check out those red lights . I thought if it was set it meant all tubes . I will take a closer look . I observed mainly from ships . But a couple of times , in external view of a sub , I saw they headed up to surface . Probably because of only setting the dial to a depth . There is more to find out about settings with the latest patches . I saw those red lights ,,but couldn't figure out what they were !

I wonder if there is a voice command for setting , or in a later patch , or in MP eventually -------- we hope .

Turn the red light on first, for tube number one. Then move the depth dial. Then either fire the torp or turn off the red light and fire the torp later.. it keeps that setting everytime that tube is reloaded. You can preset certain torpedo tubes to fire deep for subs, and the others to fire shallow for ships..

Thanks , I'll experiment further . I noted that if you try to set more than one tube for a depth , the red light goes off in the previous one .

I'll see if I can set all tubes for depth .

I did manage to fire all at depth , but quickly setting one after another .

However , this did seem to have success , and a few subs were sunk when I fired a few . carefully making sure the angle , was correct , following compass bearing , and by using the " engage target " command to read the degrees bearing of target . Seemed a lot more accurate .

First time I destroyed four of the five subs , in one mission , and the two DEs and DDs were intact !

They helped get the planes tho' !

Another useful thing in the attack of torpedo boats on the convoy , was firing all torpedoes at them too , and having first ordered an olier to re-supply , this I did , somehow , and fired another load at them ... It was the first time almost all ships were preserved ! and the two corvettes .

Bit of luck too !

Three questions 'bout the torp thing.

What is the approximate depth of ships' hulls? For example, if I wanted it to go under an allie but still be as close to the surface as possible for an enemy sub w/ periscope up.

What's the rising/lowering rate of a torpedo? If I can't hit a DE close (this is in SP, remember), I have to surface just before he goes over me to get them surfaced in time.

I've noticed another notch next to the depth meter. What is this? I thought it was speed, then I noticed KM went down as M went up... kilometers a minute?

Tyty...

1. I dont know the depths of the hulls but the 3D models of all the ships are accurate enough that you could look up their blueprints by doing research.

2. You cannot control the rate at which the torpedo rises to the surface. You can watch them by using the external camera and learn to judge what is best for you. You "might" get longer ranges before the torp gets to the surface by firing from lower depths and at higher torp speeds. (GOOD QUESTION FOR EAST).

3. KT stands for knots (speed). Meters is the range of the torp. More speed means less range.

An ally would have to be close enough that the torp had not yet finished rising to miss the ally and still hit the enemy.

Possible exceptions:

You are a sub, and your ally is a MTB at range of 100meters to max range of torp with swells of ocean waves helping, and the enemy is a deeper draft large ship further away.

You are a DD, firing your torps sideways to a target, your torps will most likely never go under an ally (unless you set them deep to target an enemy sub) except in rough seas, but would you chance it? You might be griefing another player in multiplay unless there is no friendly fire, in either case you would likely be wasting a torp.
