Game Contuinues To Crash

I need some serious assistance please. I have read all the posts concerning crashes and have tried everything, but still the game crashes during the middle of a game, sometimes 30 or so minutes into one. I am running Win 98 2nd Ed., with plenty of RAM, a 1.2 Gig processor, great video and sound cards. I play a ton of computer games, usually buying a new game every 2 weeks or so, so i keep my system up to date as far as drivers go, critical updates, etc. I run Adaware, Spybot, SpySweeper, Window Washer, and virus scans constantly. I usually run all games in 1024 x 768 resolution. I dropped it down to 800x 600 after reading these posts, but still crashes. I did the directx stuff, putting my sound acceleration on "basic". I even dropped the video settings in the game down from 100% to 75% for particles, fx, etc. I am not sure if its a sound or video problem that is causing this to occure. I had 4 torpedoes about to smash into a destroyer, and bamm......the game crashed, so i am thinking it may be a video problem, as it seamed the explosions that were about to occure just made the game drop. I use the microphone. There is never a problem getting the game to start or anything like that, it just crashes randomly somewhere in the middle of EVERY game. crybaby:

I can't think of anything else to try. Oh, and I checked my sound drivers at the Creative site and they are up to date. This is such a great game, but these random crahses are really ruining it. Will have to put this game away if i cant figure this out soon. Any help someone could provide would be most appreciated!

Oh, and i also sent a dxdiag file in an email to the support@warfleet.com addy last night.

Have you tried a reinstall? (You shouldn't lose your saved game data by uninstalling but its best to back up the C:\Program Files\...\Enigma Rising Tide\ folder just in case.)

Don't worry, TAG will look into your problem, but you need to give them a couple of days. This game is a labour of love for them and they really do want you to enjoy it to its full. However, they are only a small team and are incredibly busy 28 hours a day ;)

I hope you meant you send the email to support@warfleet.net and not ,com ? :)

Instead of saying: "I have plenty of ram, great video and sound cards."

Then for the record state what you have, including driver versions too.

Can you describe what happens when the game crashes, like do you get excessive harddisk access. ?

Does it only happen on one particualr mission, and does it only happen when torpedos are about to hit a target ?

When you play E:RT you mitgh wanna disable all those spyware programs youre running, including your antivirus.

Did you try to set the Windows page/swapfile to manual control to prevent Windows from starting to resize it during game play ?

Thanks for the replies guys. Yes Jesper, i meant .net and not .com. I have an AMD 1.4 Gig Processor, 512mg RAM, Hercules 3D Prophet 3 GForce3 video card, and Creative Sound Blaster Live sound card. Im not sure how to find more specifics on my sound card than that, but i know it has never been a problem for even the stoutest game requirements. I believe the file version for the sound card is 4.12.01.095. I went to Creative's site and did the suto update and it said i was up to date.

As far as the crashes, they all behave the same way. It looks as though it drops to an MS-DOS screen that is about half the size of my monitor. It drops to that screen for about 3 seconds, then just drops completely to windows. Then, if i try and start the game after that, I will get an invalid page fault error message, and must reboot to start game again. As to what is causing it to crash, there are a few times when an important event is occurring the crashes happen, as in the torpedo scenario i mentioned before. Those 4 torp's were in the process of slamming into the destroyer's side when the drop hit. That was a hint to me. But then other times it will drop when nothing is happening.....i didnt give any voice commands, no other orders, no torps hitting home, etc.

The drops started on the LFN sub mission 3 i think. But it definetely started on mission 4 if not 3. Im on 6 now. I played missions 1-4 on the German surface campaign and i had no probs. Only around mission 3 or 4 on lfn sub, but it has happened on all missions since in that campaign.

All the spyware programs are disabled when running game. I only start them to run them; they never stay active. A-V stopped too.

I have no idea how to change the page/swap file or even where to find that info. Maybe this is the answer? I'll keep my fingers crossed and wait for some advice as to this swap file stuff.

Thanks for the help fellas. :)

The latest driver for SBLive 5.1 Player released on 02/04/2002:

http://uk.europe.creative.com/support/driv...eula.asp?id=414

I know there is many different SBLive cards, and the only way to identify them is by the CT##### printet on the card (very clever move by creative) :(

If you open your box and lookd on the card for that CT-##### you can put that on creative site and you will be taken directly to the correct driver.

The videocard diver can be found at http://www.nvidia.com

I cant remember the exact location for the swap file in Win98, but its in Control Panel->System->Somewhere.

You want to change it to use 768MB . (reccomended for 512MB RAM users).

Or maybe its: Right click "My Computer"->Properties->Virtual Memory.

I really cant remember :(

Do you have any idea of how much RAM you have free before and during the game?

How big is your harddrive and how much is used?

Did you defrag lately?

I have on occasion had CTD's here, when loading a mission, and it could happen 2-3 times in a row and the 4th time it would work.

I have a little over 16 Gig's free space on a 40 Gig hard drive. Only about 30-40% of that RAM is used.

For the virtual memory settings, I have mine set to "let me specify my own seetings......", and have it set on 1250 minimum and 2000 maximum. I believe i changed this setting manually over a year ago, and to tell you the truth, Im not sure why i picked those settings(but i did not just pick 2 random numbers!). Are you saying i should change the minimum and maximum settings BOTH to 768?

Sadly, I dont have the box for the sound card here. I may be able to find it at work tomorrow. I did go to Creative's site and did their auto update feature, which said i was up to date. Could this be wrong?

A question about video drivers: Mine is a GForce 3, so it's Nvidia based, but the manufacturer of my card is Hercules. Would it be best to get drivers from Hercules or Nvidia in this situation? Do you know what the propper video driver I should be using is, or just get the latest?

I defragged yesterday, and before that, one month before.

One thing that i just discovered that is a little strange is that i was having some probs with Norton AV. When i clicked on the task bar and told Norton to open so i could run a scan, it would not open. So, i would hit alt-ctrl-del to open the program dialog. There i would see, "Lwtest: Program not responding" in the list. So i uninstalled Norton, and as this process was going on, it said i had a file in quarantine. I had no idea Norton had found a virus or bad file in a previous scan. It asked if i wanted to delete it, i said yes. So as i type this, i have reinstalled Norton AV and its running a new scan.

I am hoping that somehow the probs i was having with Norton is the culprit here. Ok, scan complete and no infection found.

I really appreciate your help Jesper; without you i believe i would have already given up :)

Ok, I went to Nvidia's site to look for new drivers. I currently am using the 4.13.01.3082 drivers. It prompted me to the 45.23 drivers, but then i read in another post here "Nvidia Drivers", that there may be some issues with this driver. So i have not installed this driver. What do you think Jesper?

Thanks Buxton; I will do that tonight.

Thought i had it fixed for a minute. Just played a game for an hour or more and was doing great: took out 4 CV's and 2 DD's and was going in for the kill to the Tanker's and Oiler's on LFN sub mission #6. Between my sub and my 2 friendly subs, we tool out all patrol craft and destroyers, besides one remaining DD. It was a given that we would slaughter the tankers and oilers, game was running great, and then DROPPPPPPP. Once again, i wasnt giving any orders at the time, just sitting tight trying to move into position. So very frustrating.......... crazy:
