On and Off the Flight Deck tells the story of Henry “Hank” Adlam’s experiences as a young British naval fighter pilot during World War II. That makes it a particularly useful memoir because Adlam was one of the thousands of competent wartime pilots who actually constituted the backbone of naval aviation rather than one of the handful who became famous.
