The book at that Amazon link is On and Off the Flight Deck: Reflections of a Naval Fighter Pilot in World War II by Henry “Hank” Adlam. It is a memoir of Adlam’s service as a Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm fighter pilot, primarily covering the years 1941–1948. The Pen & Sword paperback is about 256 pages.
On and Off the Flight Deck tells the story of Henry “Hank” Adlam’s experiences as a young British naval fighter pilot during World War II. Rather than focusing on a famous fighter ace, the book gives the perspective of an ordinary operational pilot the type of serviceman who flew dangerous missions repeatedly without becoming a household name.
Adlam began naval flying in 1941 and was assigned to the newly formed 890 Naval Air Squadron. One of his earliest combat assignments involved protecting an Atlantic convoy sailing from New York to Greenock. His squadron helped defend Fairey Swordfish anti-submarine aircraft and attempted to intercept German long-range reconnaissance aircraft, particularly the Focke-Wulf Fw 200 Condor, which could locate Allied convoys and report their positions to U-boats.
These early operations quickly demonstrated how dangerous naval aviation was. During Adlam's first operational voyage, his best friend was shot down. Adlam himself later had to ditch his aircraft in the stormy Atlantic. The episodes emphasize one of the book's recurring themes: pilots had to contend not only with enemy aircraft but also with weather, mechanical problems, the sea, and the inherent danger of operating aircraft from ships.
In 1942, Adlam and 890 Squadron joined the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious. His wartime service subsequently took him through several very different theaters of the conflict. He participated in further convoy operations and helped destroy a German Blohm & Voss Bv 138 reconnaissance flying boat. Illustrious later sailed into the Mediterranean, where its aircraft helped provide air cover connected with the Allied landings at Salerno in Italy.
By 1944, Adlam's war had moved eastward. His squadron served aboard ships including HMS London and HMS Atheling, providing air cover during British operations against Japanese forces and shipping around the Andaman Islands. After 890 Squadron was disbanded, Adlam transferred to 1839 Naval Air Squadron, where he flew the American-built Grumman Hellcat.
What makes the memoir particularly interesting is that it isn't primarily an "ace pilot" story. A contemporary Navy News review highlighted exactly this distinction: Adlam represented the large body of working combat pilots who flew continuously but received little of the fame associated with celebrated aces.
Main themes
The strongest theme is the everyday reality of wartime naval aviation. Adlam's experiences illustrate how rapidly young pilots were transformed from trainees into combat aviators and how dangerous seemingly routine operations could become.
Another important theme is friendship and loss. Pilots formed close relationships knowing that friends might disappear on the next mission. The death of Adlam's best friend during his first operational voyage establishes that reality very early in his story.
Finally, the book demonstrates the global nature of the Royal Navy's air war. Adlam's career takes him from Atlantic convoy protection to Mediterranean operations and ultimately to combat operations against Japan in the Indian Ocean. His personal story therefore becomes a useful window into the much broader history of Britain's Fleet Air Arm during WWII.
Overall assessment
For someone interested in WWII aviation, the value of On and Off the Flight Deck is less about spectacular combat victories and more about seeing what life was actually like for a working Fleet Air Arm pilot. Adlam experienced carrier operations, convoy protection, reconnaissance interception, Mediterranean combat, operations against Japan, crashes and the deaths of fellow pilots.
That makes it a particularly useful memoir because Adlam was one of the thousands of competent wartime pilots who actually constituted the backbone of naval aviation rather than one of the handful who became famous.
In one sentence: On and Off the Flight Deck is the memoir of an ordinary Royal Navy fighter pilot whose extraordinary journey from Atlantic convoys and HMS Illustrious to Hellcats and the war against Japan shows the danger, loss, camaraderie and routine courage behind British carrier aviation during World War II.
