Occupation?

I was wondering what my fellow Enigma Sailors do for a living?

I work as a System Engineer at the moment but my trade is a Design Engineer. I also spent two years as a Pro Boxer after a successful 10 years as an Amature, but i was not dedicated enough to make it for a living.

I'm what they call, in these parts, a 'Development Control Archaeologist'. I basically monitor all forms of development across the eastern half of Wales, UK and if any development impacts on archaeology I have to advise the local planning authorities on what to do about it ie, preserve it or excavate/record it. I then have to design the project accordingly and monitor the work of archaeological contractors. Its a nice mix of office and outdoor work and just occasionally we do get to see some pretty amazing stuff.

Now thats intresting ... i think Wales is a lovely place it sound like a job where you get to be out and about, and what scenary to be out and about in.

That sounds cool as hell, starshell. I wanted to be an archaeologist as a kid back in the 70s, but decided having food to eat was a better idea.

I'm a Realtor in the Tampa Bay area of Florida, now. I have a tech degree from the Univ. of South Florida, but the dot-com bust and bank mergers meant no jobs around here when I graduated. Kinda wished I had dropped out and did Y2K Cobol programming now.

Unemployed, but my trade is Civil Skilled Engineering Worker (in English thats a construction worker)

I`m actually a Virtual Reality designer/developer and Usability specialist. I basically design and build Virtual environments for a whole range of applications.Kinda weird, but gets you out of the house

But, Starshell, i`m from Wales! Although I`m in Nottinghmat the moment, I'm from a wee little town called Caernarfon.

Hi Gaz, yes I know Caernarfon very well , great town with those medieval walls and castle. We used to live just south of Bangor and often went to Caernarfon for a walk round the town and harbour. Rough place at night now though when all the kids come into town.

Have to agree with Torgen's sentiments that the pay is not great in archaeology when you start out. I finished my degree in '86 and spent the next 6 years on various excavations living out of tents, portacabins and rented accommodation in the UK and abroad before getting my permanent job here in mid Wales. Once you specialise the pay is not bad and on a par with other professionals. We now have the luxuries of a company pension scheme, flexi-time and permanent contracts - these things were just a pipe dream back in the 70s and 80s so things are definately improving. You do need to get a postgraduate degree (MA) also though these days, just to keep up with the competition and because it often helps to get the better paid jobs.

I am a local Deputy Sheriff. I also am a volunteer firefighter, and volunteer with the ambulance service. My degree is in Electronic Engineering, but I don't use it anymore. I got tired of travelling around the country all of the time, and never seeing my wife and kids. I think helping the public is in my blood. I love what I do.

Total Respect USS Monterey, not only a policeman but fireman and ambulance man as well ... My son wants your job(s) he always wanted to be a fireman until he decided a Pro Footballer (english football) pays enough for a Bentley ..

I'm an illustrator for aviation technical publications, mainly working on custom interiors for private and corporate jets. (Maintenance Manuals, Cabin Handbooks, IPCs, etc.) Not as fun or creative as it sounds, but it's a living. Prior to that I was an Aircrewman in the US Navy (and an aviation structural mechanic, spec in Hydraulics) which explains part of my love for the sea. This next near I plan to put more time into art, and hopefully plant a few torpedoes in this communities collective broadside. Looking forward to MP.
