After quite a while in the shop trying to decide between a couple of popular RPGs, spotted this beauty on the way to the counter, whilst clutching Age of Empires II.
Well chuffed with this magnificant impulse buy! Am now seriously considering whether the 1990 Mega Drive sim '688 Attack sub' is still the best game I own. (Anybody who has heard of it is now very welcolmed to call me a very sad man at this point, many others have).
Sorry to bleat on about it, but following a message I read here just a few minutes ago, I now count two people who at least like 688. Any more takers? would be pleased to hear I am not alone after 13 years of friends taking the mick!

Well blokeofkent i'm with you, as i totaly *loved* 688 attack sub on the Mega Drive -away back beginning of the '90s. Although i also loved 'Buck Rogers','Star Flight','Super Monaco Grand Prix' and do you remember 'Ballz'? That was just sheeer class!
So i guess you must be around your mid-thirties?

Haven't owned a console since but now have 5 PCs; Pentium100,64mb EDO,1Gig HDD + Matrox Mystique up to my Athlon XP2000,512mb PC2700,GF4 TI4600.
At least the games are way,way cheaper than consoles and you wont get graphics like E:RT on a console either
Most months Edge magazine have a feature on 'retro' gaming or hardware. Most of the content is print only but they do put some stuff on the website.
If you can get over the "we're hardcore gamers" editorial style it's not a bad read

I'm mid twenties Tracer, and the memories certainly came flooding back, when you mentioned Star Flight especially. I still have my Mega Drive and a couple of months back I bought Super Monaco GP II on E-bay. Classic!
Well, off now to find the Sceptre of Order in another dose of King's Bounty. (Anybody? Nah, forget it.)

That was an excellent game.
My fav mission was the one where you had to fire off your cruises and skulk away - that one was nerve wracking.
Correct me if I'm wrong - but could you also play an alfa. I remember one mission - maybe from 688 - where you in an alfa and had to try and scare away a Trafalgar.
I think it is quite a good game meself if a little 'arcadie' some of the missions are pretty challenging too

The mission you describe was called 'Hit and Run'. A most taxing mission, but most satisfying when you pulled it off.
I prefer commanding the Alpha. Maybe because one of the sub-mariners looks like my dad, I don't know.
It was in the Russian Alpha that you could play 'Sub Ops'. The mission was to patrol the Barents Sea. If you discovered any subs belonging to the imperialist scum (i.e. The Trafalgar), the best thing to do was to scare that bad boy away with a good dose of Sonar Ping.
Yeah, that was it - thanks for the reminder. My fave trick was get REAL close to the trafalgar and ping its a$$.
I might go up in the loft tonight to see if I can find it. Chances are I will only find "Ground Zero Texas" - if my memory serves me right.
