Pet's are getting another revamp in 3.1, with new talents and some shuffling of abilities - notably, the Gorilladin's Thunderstomp becomes a Tenacity talent and the Wolf's AP buff gets changed to Hunter+Pet only and stacks with BoM/Shout.

Personally I'm trying out a Warp Stalker as my new tank pet. Its innate ability means Charge is not needed, saving a talent point, *plus* it provides 50% avoidance with a ~25% uptime. At the moment, it doesn't even cost Focus! I'll be running with this build. Shame no avoidance/last stand, but I'm not BM so have to make some sacrifices.

In the Ferocity school, Wolves are looking very good for non-BMs, as they help boost the primary source of DPS, the hunter himself. Boris barks excitedly. I'll probably run with this build.

And finally, cunning pets now may be closer to being viable for non-BM, at least in 5 and 10 mans, since they get same base DPS modifiers as Ferocity and the Roar of Recovery cooldown has been reduced to something sensible. This build gets most of the good stuff for PvE. Kiyo nods approvingly.

Im still not sure how i feel about the new thunderstomp generosity. I actually liked my gorilla and didnt feel the preassure of "omg i have to get a stupid gorilla when i actually would love anything else but the gorilladin for lvling". So im left with the opposit problem now. Should i give up my trusty gorilla Louis, because he is kind of obsolite now? He could just as well be replaced by any other tenacity pet now. I mean my slime croc Slick can do the same as Louis now, so why waste the space in the stable?

Well.. that probably goes under the category luxury problems.

ON the other hand you have a point with the warp stalkers. They are neat and their ability is coming in handy. But im not sure if i like the look of them. mostly its the colour im thinking about. Ive always been very adamint about having pets i like the look of, and animation of as well. And warp stalkers just havent received the love they truly ned from blizz yet. I mean there is about 5 or 6 different colours out there but only two is tameable. Grrrr... And the two im not that crazy about. But the purple one is gorgeous, unfortunetly its not tameable anymore Image.

It is good news for cunning pets though, so might be looking after a nice cunning pet. Have disregarding them after they made my favourite owl Harold cunning and gave the one skill i used in raid to the bird of prey (ferocity). Still its not optimal, but its getting there.

And going a little OT here - im still not sure if i should go SV. My dps is actually not that good lately, but the raid buff is still a factor. To bad they are taking the wolfs raid buff and making it hunter only, but hopefully that will buff my dps, so thats good i guess. And that should help my decision to bring my wolf even in 25 naxx and not just my cat, which i personally find as one of the most boring and overrated pets in wow...

Oh, god. i did it again. Grumpy old penguin reporting for duty.. sigh. Sorry. fact is probably that im not really out there finding all the different pet possibilities a hoot since i mostly raid now with my hunter, so its either wolf or cat. Only been asked a couple of times to bring tenacity pets to raid (naxx 10), which was hilarious btw . But still - i love my pets as much as the next hunter. Maybe i should get my hands on a raptor so i could determine for once if the cat is soooo much better. Raptors are way cooler than cats in my book.

Hmm. Turned out to be a pretty long post after all. Maybe i should get back to work.. hehe.

Gorillas are far from obsolete, they are just no longer mandatory. The reason they are still good is that they have a caster interrupt.

Agreed regarding the purple warpie - wish I'd tamed it whilst it was still available :'( Also the animations - like many outland and northrend critters - are not as smooth as the old world ones.

The wolf change is good for us, since how may raids (even 10 mans) did you go to where there was neither a warrior nor a pally doing BoM?

FWIW the number crunching from the PTR (based on T8 & best in slot gear with an optimal raid) puts Wolf > Devilsaur > Cat > Raptor > Windserpent. That's with SV spec (yeah, I know you can't have a devilsaur as SV plus the tool doesn't support spirit beast yet). I can run the numbers again for your spec if you like.

Anyway, I guess that the which pet (and which spec) question is largely irrelevant for you now eh? ;)

Big grats on the new furball!

Yup. That little beauty pretty much made the decision for me Image.

BTW - any good ideas to where its fastest to lvl up a pet. Levelling pets always seems to be a very slow process for me, and I need my spirit beast to be 80 in just about no time at all Image.

And did you see my comment about the name? I kind of like "Hex". Its short and sounds dangherous, just like the comix. But what do you think? Suggestions are as always welcome, since i need the right name for this incredible beast.

Hodir token grind on the fire elementals not bad for pet levelling, especially if you are on at odd times. That's how I levelled my warpie in just a few days. At least you can always sell the tokens or use on an alt plus you get lots of fire motes.

Hex sounds short & sweet. As an aside, I think the model is based on a Clouded leopard.

Be sure to keep him (he is a him, right?) well groomed.

PS in 3.1 pets will get more spell hit, which means magic dealers like the spirit beast & wind serpents will do more damage than currently.

Im having second thoughts on the name, now. Ive given it some more thought, since i have to get this one just right. I mean its not like im gonna get another chance on this anytime soon. So here it goes...

I was thinking Elvis. But is it a crime to call him Elvis (i mean there is only one king) or is it a crime not to call him Elvis (I mean he is the king of pets so its not that long a strech Image)?

Hehe.

On another note - the pet groming gear is a hoax. It only works for vanity pet! Talk about false advertisement... grrr.

Hmm... "The King" maybe has connotations with King Bangalash. But then again Elvis is dead (allegedly) so his bestial spirit coming back works too.

Its not quite as immutable as it used to be as you can rename a pet with an Inscription scroll now. Obviously, you still want to get it right.
