Powerplay is now active for a few weeks. And I like it.

I can tell you to look at these video's but let me tell you a little bit more.

First, not choosing any of the factions changes nothing. You can go your merry way in doing what you want to do.
In Powerplay you choose which NPC faction you want to join. Help that faction to expand.
That's it.
But is it !

These factions resolve things differently. Transporting, killing, stealing. They all have the same goal. Domination.
If you join a faction though, you will be an enemy to other players and NPC's not belonging to your faction. And this means you can fire and be fired upon without penalty.
So choosing a faction will set your alert level higher. So beware.

You can earn merits if you help your faction. These merits will get you ranked up in a faction, earning you extra stuff (cash, modules, weapons) as you climb through the ranks.

 

Powerplay is a very good concept. It's not player driven where a few rule it all.
