I've been playing a lot on your TOW Darkest Hour server a lot lately, many thanks to Fuby and the crew for running a fine server!

But to get to the point of this post, I think I've got something new you folks might just be interested in, and I notice there's not much new going on in the Air Talk area.

So here I am Image

Rise Of Flight: The First Great Air War, published by the Russian team at neoqb, has been out for about a month now in North America. Some people love it, some hate it. For the record, I'm one of the ones who loves it.

There's thousands of posts on the subject over at SimHQ if you'd like to check it out, but here's my take:

I think this is going to be THE WW I flight sim for the foreseeable future. Why? Some argue that the single player missions, campaign, and multiplayer areas are mighty thin. True. But the core...the sim's engine...is the most amazing thing I've seen in a long while. I am now disabled, but until 2006 I was a professional pilot, had been for 20 years, and my experience includes over 30 years' worth of flying, including time in a pretty diverse range of machines from gliders through medium turboprop transports, and even a bit of open cockpit biplane stick time.

Flying in ROF is as real as it gets right now, in my opinion. I'm not the only one who feels this way; most of the comments by other 3-D world pilots that I've read concur. It's an elusive thing to describe, but it just FEELS right. Without going into too much rhapsodic detail (and risk being called a mindless fanboy) all I'll say is that this sim is the first thing I've encountered since I had to retire over 3 years ago that makes me feel like a real pilot again. I have flown a bit in IL-2, and a worthy sim it is...but the realism and immersiveness of ROF kinda makes it pale in comparison, at least for my part ;)

Neoqb issued their Mission Statement earlier this month HERE explaining their purpose, and I liked what they had to say. The short version is that they had to balance the release date of what they knew perfectly well was an 'incomplete' project against the strong pressure from the sim community to get it out the door, and they did so once they'd determined it reasonably represented the simulation they envisioned.

The missions: yup, sparse, but they will grow with time, you can't really have an in-depth campaign or extensive single missions when most of the planes that need to be included in them haven't even been built yet in the sim!

Multiplayer: it's got a cumbersome GUI, the chat function is bad, and smooth net coding ain't there yet...but I am convinced all this will shortly be fixed. I've played a bit on the few servers up, and even with the problems it's big fun. Actually, today or tomorrow should see some major improvements as there's a game update due out that addresses lots of these issues.

Online DRM: one of the most controversial aspects of the sim; neoqb requires anyone running the game to be online full time, even when doing single player missions for authentication with their servers as well as keeping track of MP achievements and single player awards. That's a deal-breaker for some folks.

I don't mind it myself. Steam works much the same way, and I've yet to experience a problem starting the game and connecting with their authentication servers. I'm no fan of IP laws, but neoqb didn't go running to any government or legal hired guns, they set up their own system to prevent piracy...and it seems justified; do a Google search on 'rise of flight' and you'll see about a zillion torrent, keygen, and other sites trying like mad to crack the game...and failing.

Flyable aircraft: Originally, there were only two intended for customers, the SPAD 13 and Fokker D.VII, but a few weeks ago, neoqb added two more for goodwill, the Nieuport 28 and Albatros D.Va. Just so there's no confusion, North American and European buyers will have FOUR flayable aircraft included in the purchase price.

Additional aircraft, to be purchased as they're released, are currently priced at $7.62 each. Right now the only plane for sale is the Nieuport 17, and I bought mine within hours of its becoming available...and I'll be doing so for most, if not all of the new planes down the road. Like Steam, once you buy one, it's yours, so you don't have to worry about reinstalling or repurchasing if you replace your PC. BTW, the next ones due shortly are the British SE5-A and Pfalz D3...the videos of the betas are on YouTube and I'm fairly salivating to get my hands on 'em :P

To me, paying a few bucks extra for additional planes as they're released is trivial, because they're so painstakingly modeled, and their flight and damage models are totally unique. These planes are not crash boxes with different skins slapped on, I can attest.

Now, if you're not inclined to pay extra, no problem, you just won't be able to fly the new planes...but they will be included as AI opponents or objects you can include if you use the mission builder, downloaded to your ROF folder along with new game updates. That's another rather nifty feature of their always-online requirement to my mind; everyone will be on the same page with the most up to date version because every time you fire up the ROF launcher it checks for updates, and there will never be a need to hunt for patches to install. The updates and changes to the game itself are free, incidentally; the only thing I can see neoqb charging for might be additional map/theaters, but I'm convinced that any of these will be well worth a small cost.

I decided to write this today because I've been pretty impressed with TOW as a community of enthusiasts likely to be in line with my own interests, and I'm hoping to share this experience with y'all. Hope I don't sound like I'm proselytizing, but I'm hoping you guys and gals will jump in with me; I love spreading my addictions and would love to have some company! My own clan, the Misfit Force, is a great bunch, but I don't think many of them are interested in much outside of the shoot-em-up world of FPS games...we did come together with Half Life 2 as our main focus, but I like variety, what can I say...lol

Look forward to jousting with you in the skies over France!

Hi gunloon,

Thanks for adding to my addiction...games!!

I am a terrible flight game player , but I try most of them.. wish they had a demo for this one.

I really like the Red Barron era of flight.. and some of those youtube vids on this one look great!

Await your comments on the patch fix..and how well the multiplayer online works now.

As for paying for new planes etc.. it seems to have become the norm and way most are going these days.

If the price is low, I wouldn't mind.. if that keeps a company improving a game in years to come.

I guess it all costs..if you have people sitting there on the payroll.

and after a few months from release..they still have to make money if they are going to keep improving it.

addictions..just got to love'em!!

Hi gunloon...
Await your comments on the patch fix..and how well the multiplayer online works now.!
The patch resolved several issues, caused a couple of new ones but is overall a big improvemment.

Remember, this game has only been available for a month, and the developers have made it clear it will be an ongoing work...in my opinion, they're doing pretty well when you consider all that's on their plate. They know that a vast chunk of their audience is primarily interested in online play, and as far as I can see, they have been, are, and will continue to devote resources to improving it.

We're already seeng more online servers, yesterday I spent some time at Jasta 99's server in Germany and it was very smooth and playable, despite the relatively high latency.

Now, their setup was very one sided, Nieuport 17s vs. the locals in Albatros D.vs, and the non-Jasta 99 guys were behaving badly, vulching and shooting up guys on the ground still trying to start their engines, but I think this is part of the growing pains. The ones displaying poor sportsmanship were probably kids exploiting a rather poorly designed scenario.

I did a writeup about my experience on SimHQ detailing this and one of the 99 guys, Sizzlorr, saw it and wrote back apologizing for the misbehavior on their server, as well as the unbalanced scenario, which was hastily pressed into service and was not member-made. He also invited me to come back soon for a better balanced session.

I'm including this story because it bodes well for the future of this sim; Jasta 99's been around almost 10 years and it's clear they're serious about encouraging a good solid online experience for ROF pilots. With support like that it'll be hard to go wrong!

Like you, I prefer human opponents, and I'm convinced that with the solid base of sim enthusiasts ROF is attracting along with progressive improvement of net coding and innovative user-created missions, we're in for years of good MP.

Neoqb isn't sitting still at all, another hotfix update will be along shortly, and they released two new planes just last night, the RAF SE-5a and the Pfalz D-IIIa. Needless to say, I purchased both at what I think is a relatively low price of $7.62 apiece, and I can report that the short time I've spent flying each assures me that they're every bit as good as I expected.

Owing to the complex and accurate flight model, each has its own very distinctive personality, both in flight and damage models. These are definitely NOT crash boxes with different skins slapped on.

Take a look at some of the new YouTube vids and see for yourself:

Muahaha...you're so doomed. I told you TIR is one of those things that once you have it, you have no idea how you got by without it.

Once you get ROF and TIR installed, I anticipate some interesting conversations about flying these old kites

Hee hee hee, I love spreading my addictions around...

I might update this later... but... I can not honestly suggest this to anyone.

My system runs everything out there up to and including Crysis..

I have ran this progam about 6-7 times.. YES it LOOKS AWESOME!!

But WAY to many headaches.. WAY to many heartbeat skips..

4 of those times all errored to Black screen.. all needed a cold start to get back up.

the 4th time.. locked when just flying along.. locked with my systems error beeps.. one long beep till I shut it down!

I actually had to Unplug it from wall.. pull the graphics card , reseat the card ,

and hope with crossed fingers it would boot and didnt take my card out totally.... yes all these gave me NO SIGNAL prompt from my monitor.

I will not beta test this any longer.. to me that is what it is...a beta released WAY to early...WAY WAY to early..

I mess with computers..I am not stupid..I build and get others back up when theirs are down..

This program is a nitemare to the average user.. they went and shipped a product that is bound for the been there..done that bin..

Im glad I got it in a bundle package.. it's not worth even the shipping cost to me.

I did not sign up for beta testing using my equipment.

On a side note.. i got TrackIR5 with this... it works great in IL-2.. what a difference!!

Told ya I would update this...:)

it's the darn default setup for graphics cards..

they have a check on POST EFFECTS... welp, if your not paying attention..

this will cause all those errors I had..BIG time errors...

how many people just get fed up at this point? I almost did...

Now, I am in the process of seeing how much I can turn on or off..

this is an intense system hog... kills a 8800GT pretty easily.. so beware..

Still wouldn't suggest it to the light hearted yet..

First..they need an update..that has POST EFFECTS turned off at defualt instead of on!

Oh I tried the multiplayer also.. wow.. this game got problems..lol

Im sorry... the lobby thingy..that really bites.. I got kicked out of the only server online which I think was the game.. not the server..

ran my own.. used bots.. did it for just 4 players.. the lag on my system was soooo bad... its just not playable.

I'll mess a bit more..but I got my "been there done that" box close by... and I keep looking that way..

Jeez, I'll see if I can help figure out why the sim's giving you so much trouble, sorry to hear that.

As I told you on TS tonight, it's been smooth as silk for me since I installed it. I've had maybe two crashes to desktop since late June when I first started with ROF, and nothing like the system hangups you've had.

I wonder if this could be a program vs. hardware conflict...ever use the Nhancer program to customize Nvidia cards to specific programs?

I have it but haven't messed with it since everything's run so well for me, maybe using it would help. (LINK)

In the meanwhile I'll scout the forums to see if anyone's had troubles like yours.

Glad to hear the TrackIR's working fine, that's a good start!

Someone mentioned heat at RoF.. that and system are probaby it..

Mine is just a 3ghz duel cpu, 4gb mem, 8800GT... and if I have anything set higher than low everything...or off if available..

welp, the temp keeps rising.. till black screen....reason for errors in different places..

first game I got to kill the 8800gt...sigh..time marches on.. CPU never gets to hot..about 50c

Wonder how many people are going to find hardware failure or burn up their cards on this one?

Now to compare.. setting everything off and low..I can keep it at about 85c with cpu at around 48c and it runs ok in single player..kinda..

Cpu runs at about 90 % load on both cores..woohoo...out dated again...

This is really for a better system.. their min specs are kinda low if you want to enjoy the game imho.

this shouldn't create a flame for saying it..but there it does..lol

The big shame of it... with everything off.. IL-2 actually looks better to me...and more responsive.. "with my system"

so Canvas Knights is back on the waiting list. also IL-2 runs much cooler.. and much less load..65% on one core..

Im sure it works fine for your system Gunloon..I don't doubt it..

I just think mine beats the minimum..and that just gets the game going.

with very little eye candy and control response quick enough to enjoy it..

welp, I can toss it to the side till the next computer upgrade..

this one game does not grab me yet as the one for the upgrade..:)

now if COD6 needs an upgrade..sigh..maybe then..:)

enjoy your flights!!

Wow...something ain't right here. My CPU runs at 37, maybe 38 C after 2 hours straight...

I sure understand why you wouldn't want to fool with it until you upgraded, no sense in risking damage to your system. And certainly no one program, unless it's a life or death matter, (and this isn't ) is worth an equipment upgrade.

Still, Oleg is due to release Storm Of War one of these days, and Tripwire has Red Orchestra 2 on the burner...might become a more pressing issue before too much longer! Besides, sooner or later neoqb should get its act together and get some server-side software out. Now I gotta see about getting the house refinanced so I can think about getting a quad core upgrade for my own machine...y'know, just in case...

<snickers evilly>

In the meanwhile I'll have to play around with Fraps, maybe record some good eye candy to post. The Albatros D-III is due for release shortly, that or the Pfalz D-III fighting a Nieuport 17 should make for some good looking scenes Image
