Us Surface - When Promoted?

I'm currently replaying the US Surface campaign in an attempt to make Commander before mission 8 (and hence get the Stonewall Jackson instead of the Carter Bull again). I'm now up to mission 4, though, and I'm only a Lt. J.G. Could someone give me an idea of when they were promoted during the campaign? I'd like to have some idea of what to shoot for.

i'm in the same boat you're in. with all the medals i have (navy cross, purple heart, and silver star) and with over 35,000 tons of sunk merchants and warships, you'd think i'd be a commander or captain already. i went over this game again just to see if i could get the dd at or after mission 8, but i was not able to.

i think the promotions are scripted into the game and can only be received after or upon the completion of certain missions.

p.s. please make usa surface campaign 10a and 10b and lfn surface 6 more easier. those 3 missions are really taxing me and might cause me to just forget the game. after all, these missions are supposed to be fun and not like the dreading i'm going through.

also, i don't think it's very fair to pit a lowly de or dd against a battlecruiser or battleship. in klingon academy, one of the rules of engagement was never to go over your limits. in the case for this game, fighting singlehandedly (it seems like this always happen with the dumbed down ai) with multiple dd and de and a bb is just too overwhelming.
