Lfn - Sub Mission #3

Stay surfaced, head FLANK ahead towards the convoy, deckguns on autofire.
Head straight into the convoy, fire some torpedos while your heading there, you should be able to sink 4-5 or them.

When youre there, stay surfaced, till the DE's are close and you start taking critical fire, then you dive and sets speed to 1/3, now take out the rest of the convoy.

The DE's will go attack your allies, except one, it will turn around behind you.

If you havent sunk all of the convoy by then, then you should take out the DE with your AFT tubes, while still concentrating on the convoy.

If some of the convoy gets too far away while fighting that DE, dont worry, just sink the DE, then FLANK ahead towards the remaing convoy, when your up to full speed submerged, then surface and set deckguns on auto.

The remaining DE's is too busy with your allies to hunt you.

Good Luck Captains :)

Here's my walkthrough, similar but slightly different. For example, I was able to remain at flank speed throughout the mission.

I won this mission when it started with 2 fellow RNE subs to my SE and the enemy DESRON (destroyer squadron) to the north, slightly NE and the target merchant convoy to your north.

There is a possibility of the mission starting with the other 2 RNE subs to your NE and the DESRON more NE that north. That one was much more of a killer than the above starting sequence and I did not pass this mission when started with this scenario.

Moving on.............

Engines to flank speed and head to starboard, in the direction of the middle of the convoy, then hold course. Stay above surface.

Target the nearest merchant use the ENGAGE command.

At some point you'll start getting cannon shots over your bow from the DESRON approaching to your distant starboard. The other 2 RNE subs will stall them. Start firing shots into the broadside of neaby merchants at the convoy's tail end as you get really close to them.

After you've knocked off a tail-end merchant, quick dive and go to periscope depth. I always set my scope's magnification to 1x so that I have no halucinations about how close or far I am from anything.

Be patient. Start heading towards the north tail end ship and fire on it when you're 100 certain that it won't have time to manouver out of its path.

Go hard to starboard and approach the other merchants on the southern edge of the convoy. Again, when very close, get 'em with just one fish broadside.

Weave back hard to port and keep on doing this until you've gotten them all. Don't fire the fish from too far away unless you're certain that they won't mission. Occasionally treat yourself to a spread of 2 or 3, as the HMS Dauntless has 6 fore tubes and reloads relatively fast.

All this time, keep an eye on the DESRON. At times they appeared to approach but then go into a distant circling pattern.

I assume that between the two other RNE subs, the DESRON'sr own noise, the distance and the noise from the convoy, they can't pick you up very well. Just keep your eyes peeled. The 2 RNE subs eventually will get sunk and then the DESRON might have other things to do in your direction.

enigma!:

Thanks for the tips I wil certainly give this a try. I quite frankly am so tired of getting nearly all of the Merchant ships sunk while I am submerged no less and then running out of juice in my batteries only to surface and get slaughtered by the darn DE's. arrrgh!!

Remember your 4" has a greater range , if you keep at anot 4km distance you won't take much fire.

You can target one merchant until it sinks , rather than let the AI divide its fire between two or more , sinking none .

Pick the target .

If sunk , pick next one.

The merchants tend to circle back towards the South , and their DEs .

Get fairly close , torpedoes are limited .
