I know that some Canadian dde (actually frigates) had large Mortars. These could fire large depth charges well out too about 2-3000 feet I would guess. Yes I have seen them fire they where still in use when I joined, the projectile stays within sight so it can`t be shooting all that far. They where normally in groups of 3 and fired 3 at a time , some ships had 2 banks of 3 each. They where in a well on the quarter deck aft of the rear gun mount. These frigates where asw ships mainly, I am not sure how early these weapons actually came into use however. I believe this game is set in circa 1936? I would however think that the technology of the time did extend to the mortar and it certainly would not take a rocket scientist to think of useing it to launch a depth charge. So I think I could be added if enough thought it a good weapon. I would suggest a asw type of dde, and a gun boat type as well? More types of boats will be added I`m sure. I`d like to know what they might be??

What you are referring to was called a SQUID. It is a combination of the HEDGEHOG mortar system and DEPTH CHARGES. It was SONAR guided and very accurate. It also is a early 40's technology and something we will keep out of range until we at least have the visiblity and silent running capabilities working perfectly. The SQUID made it very unpleasant to be a submariner.

Actually I served on a Canadian frigate that had this weapon, we had no hedge hog and I have never heard it called anything but aa ASW Mortar. This was not in 1940 but in early to mid 80s, I think all the ships fitted with it have since been scrapped or scuttled to make artifical reefs. ( at the time I joined it was just the training squadron that still used the mortar. The OP squadron had ships with ASROC, so mortar was very out dated) These things where big, the tube is about 6 feet long and approx 24 inchs in diameter. It is not a "launched" depth chage but actually has tail fins like a rocket and is specialy designed to be shot out of this one weapon. we used them mainly for killing salmon....lol, but of course we NEVER intentionally fired into a school of salmon that would be very bad PR. Hard to resist all those fresh fish floating around though, mmmm, and of course it would be a waste for the cooks not to fix em up for the boys.
I should tell about the food fight we had with the russian spy troller. They thu potatoes at us when we steamed close, and we threw oranges and apples and watched the ruskies scramble to pick them up.....lol. I swear to god this is true..

I've heard of those ASW mortars. Basicly K-guns with much longer, adjustable ranges. They were called squids when they were invented, but not anymore. And their range did indeed make a submariner's life a living hell. If they were to be implemented before such stealth improvements as silent running, thermoclines, sonar baffles, etc, it would ruin sub warfare in the game.
