k, I've sunk a sub with DC's, but I'll be damned if I can't put one down using headgehogs. On the up close radar and inside the innermost circle, I simply cannot sink one with hogs, and I know the subs not very deep because its firing tows.
Any ideas ? How are the mechanics supposed to work in this game ?
DC's are pretty tough to get a hang of too. Visibility in trying to dodge tows in the water has proven awkward as well.
BTW, those airplanes are a pain in da arse !
Hogs fly out to about 300m and just keep droppping until they hit something. Torps can be fired from a depth of up to 50 metres but subs can change depth very quickly when shallow and also move out the way quickly using pivot turns and flank.
Just some general DC tips:
As far as DC's go, you need to thing about a couple of things:
- How deep the sub is now;
- Where the sub is now;
- How fast it's moving.
and then guess all of those factors by the time your DC's will make it to the depth required and nail the sucker.
You need to think like a sub captain so I'd heartily recommend playing some sub missions and try to get into that mindset.
Dodging torps is great fun, unless you get caught between two subs and then you have them coming at you from multiple angles. Generally unless I have plenty of time to turn away from the torps I turn towards the sub and as corporate says above use spectator view (& keyboard or voice control) to jink between them. You then get a good chance to drop some DC's on it in return for the torps.
Hope this helped.

Hi,
thanks Ripped for tip on range of hedge hog. I treid it like you said, lined him up dead ahead at 300m and fired. I know were he was cause I could see his scope until about 400m when he dove.( right after his torps passed one down each side)I am pretty sure I got 1 hit, I saw 1 larger than usuall explosion where the mortars landed (also the subs speed dropped instantly) does this sound like a hit? The sub died after I passed over it and dropped charges again, just slightly ahead of him.
I did not loose the contact after the first explosion however. Is this because the hedgehog only explodes if it hits a sub and so the few seconds of no asdic is not modeled as it is with the DC? Or because I cut my engines so to hear better? (also turns faster with no way on)

I have killed subs outright with a hedgehogs which i thought was nearly impossible since they are less the 1/2 the size of DCs.
If Hedgehogs where on all RNE surface ships it would be good cuase in WWII (even though this game has no historical refrence to WWII) all English DE and DD had hedgehogs installed.
enigma!:

because 'hogs' are exploding when *touching* the sub, and the fact that they are shaped charges, they need much less "oomph" to cause a catastrophic failure than a DC, which is trying to break things with a big shock wave.

Does a single geyser about 10 seconds after the hedgehog pattern falls mean that I've hit a sub with the hedgehog? Cause I've gotten that 3 times on the same sub, without getting a kill message.

hedgehogs dont explode unless they hit something. With the beefed-up sub hitpoints right now, it takes more than one to kill it. Heck, if you can hit it 10 times with a 4" gun and it still floats, it'll take more than one 'hog to do it in

A more novice than novice question: how to fire the hogs?
