Here is how I did.
FLANK AHEAD, RIG FOR DIVE, HARD PORT (towards the leader of the convoy) calculate it so you aim in front of him so you have him on sight when youre close for the killer shot. HOLD HATCH at 0sec.

Keep going, adjust your course as you get closer.. they will start shooting at you, but dont worry, a little damage wont hurt.

When youre ~1200meter from the leader, then PERISCOPE DEPTH and take him out. PIVOT STARBOARD take out the 2 closest on your way around, but keep PIVOT'ing till you face the 1st to got past you on your rear end, take it out (note you might have to fire a shot on a CV that comes too close as your turning, just give 1 warning shot or sink it, that doesnt matter).

After you fired upon the 1st Merchant, start PIVOT PORT and take out the rest they are now all so close that you cant miss.

Captains Log:

Mission Completed in 13mins and 12 secs.

Dont worry about the 2 DE's that are approaching, they wont make it in time for close battle

Completed the mission with still 2 Merchants floating.

The CV's didnt cause much treat, they didnt seem to know where we were, even we where at FLANK speed.

Some constructive criticism.

1. I mentioned elsewhere that in the control panel text at mission start, it mentions the enemy having a new, unfamiliar weapon called hedgehogs. Hedgehogs were already present on the enemy vessels in USN Sub Mission #1.

2. I tried a million ways to beat this mission. Out of frustration, I searched for and found this thread. Jesper's walkthrough worked like a charm the first time I followed it. I even sunk a DE that kept tossing fish at me

That's very nice of Jesper but this is essentially a suicide mission otherwise. I love a challenge but missions should be marginably winnable. Maybe more USN subs are needed or less enemy DEs and CVs. If it makes any difference, I'm playing on the maximum difficulty setting.

3. At mission end, I earned a naval citation. The sitation lists me as an Ensign. I've already been promoted at least twice, I think. Please send it back to the Secretary of the Navy and have them white-out the incorrect rank and retype over it.

im gonna have to try that. i played that mission all day yesterday. i got to the point where i took out 4 or 5 of the enemy DEs and CVs, but the last couple always got me.

i got it! i think my misison lasted about 45 minutes, and i had a few good circling battles with the DEs and CVs, but i eventually finished off the entire flotilla.

i started out immediatly taking fire, and catching on fire. no surface travel for me, the DEs spawed in about 2000 meters away, traveling at their top speed. my 17 knots was going to be worthless. i went right to periscope depth, and headed straight for the convoy. took out the first 2 merchants with comfortable distance shots, the 3rd was hasty as i made a turn to face my first attacker, who i took out nearly scraping hulls at 235m. turned to start chasing down the convoy again, got another one from distance, then turned to face another attacker. this time it was 2 DEs and a CV, the first DE i took out with a pivot and launched all 4 at one, hitting him broadside. while circling with the second DE, the CV happend to be in my baffles, so i hit him with a spread from my stern. continued circling against the second DE, wrestling for an advantageous position, until i was able to pivot and launch all 4 against him too. every now and then, a DC gets a little close, and i lose a little hull integrity. during all this, im changing depths a lot, going from 49 to 145 to 35 to 150, etc. i finally send the second DE to the bottom, and start off after the last 4 merchant ships, with 2 CVs on my stern. i sent a moderate spread from all 4 tubes, and got one. changed course back towards the last 4 merchants, and full speed, little by little the last CV comes into my rear sights, and i let him have it from all for, with a moderate spread (my general purpose spread is usually 1p, 1s, 2p, 2s). he tried to evade, and it looked like he got around the first 2, but the second 2 got him good. i surfaced, gasping for clean air and an opportunity to run from my 100% fuel tank, as my batteries were down to the yellow. steamed ahead at flank speed, took the first of the last 4 out, and did atight manuver aounnd his hulk so i could hold close to my closing course that i was on. launched 1 at M18, turned to bear upon M17, and M16 starts firing on me. by this time, ive taken enough damage that im not steering straight anymore, and im taking on water, causing my stern to settle in the water, thus my scope to be almost looking up. since im already damaged, and i dont think i can take anymore, i go back to the saftey of pericope depth, and sent M17 to the bottom with a single torpedo. i pivot, and give the last 3 to M17.

i tried this mission 19 times. eek! lol (i even got hulled in there a few times!!)

**edit** i just finally clicked continue... i got 3 medals for that mission!! lol

Okay, after about a dozen tries, I finally got it...

For me, the trick was to realize that i should just pull a loop around the merchants and only fire on the CVs and DEs when they were in my baffles. Any time there was one at 180, I'd let loose a volley of fish at around 30kts on them with a few seconds between them. The end result: I got the merch. and ended up sinking the Lt. Com. DE... not a bad day's work...

Destroyers are soo easy to sink- as lightly armored as a patrol boat and as slow as a merchant. The thing you have to worry about is when you run of oxygen, and the damn come along.
