Colonel Joseph L. (Lockhart) Ryan, shot down over Italy around the time of the invasion. Transported to a POW camp, Ryan takes command of the prisoners mainly composed of a British Regiment. After the surrender, Ryan and company find themselves based behind enemy lines, trying to escape.
Their cross country walk lands them back in the hands of the Germans, who put them on a train headed back to the Motherland. When the prisoners take the train through deceit and force, the race is on to get to Switzerland, and freedom.
Frank Sinatra stars as Ryan, alongside Trevor Howard as Major Finchum. Easily, Sinatra's best film, although he looks a little thin in some shots. Filmed in 1965 when the "escape" genre of films was steamrolling, this great story examines a unique angle of the war. Undoubtable, the last scene is a real tear jerker.
