Tides of War

Ok, I am stuck on what must be a simple mission. I always get stuck on the simple things. How do I complete the second RNE surface mission. I have shelled, depth charged the sub, but I always seem to run out of time. If I wait, again, I run out of time. The other ship does little in support when the sub dives.

What is the secret?
