What is the objective of the 1/8 red crescent that appears on the outer edge of my radar screen? Sometimes it shows 2. I'm a newbie to all of this and figure I need to learn everything I can. Thank You.

It shows that there are enemies in that direction
if you can see 1 from W->N it means there is enemies in that direction
if you can see 2 from W->N and N-E it means that there are either some in both directions or just some close to N.

When the enemy on ASDIC ( which it technically is ) is beyond the range you set .. for example if you were in a sub ,, and ship was at 600m , the red will show , if you have it set to 500m .
If you change to 1 k the red disappears .
Like wise if set to 4k and eneny at 5k .. but when you change to 8k red disappears .
It shows red , when beyond the set range , thus ,, but not red when enemy are within that distance .
When tracking an enemy and the red disappears , you know it is within the range , altho might not yet show as a red dot anywhere .
This is useful particularly in the German surface 4 when the 8 torpedo boats all scatter !

8 PTs? I could have sworn there were only 4 inbounds, and I only saw 2 hulls and a third smoke trail. I couldnt sink them either, I watched 2 shells hit one of them, but the thing wouldnt sink. After they scattered the radar didnt show anything and it didnt tell me I won, then I lost power. Ill try it again if I dont lose power again NOAA says theres a strom 2 miles out that can produce winds of 60+mph.
