I put no less than twelve fish into a Hood, I did it at varying depths, I hit the Bow, the Stern and in the middle and it did not go down.

I played this mission 6 times before I finally got my sub alone with these monsters and actually I put 4 torps into the other one!

Not even the Yamato would have withstood twelves hits!!!! What am I missing?

It is not possible to sink Hood in some of the missions (forgot which).

It has been reported that in the missions where you can sink a BB it takes ~24 fishes

See my screenshot .

It took 50 and maybe a couple more .

This was one of the regular Campaign missions , not patrol .

How did I manage it?

Well first I captured that Alliance you can see in the picture , and you notice my weapons control is an Alliance DD panel .

For some reason the Hood's crew didn't notice ( or expect ) an Alliance sneaking up close alongside , under their secondary batteries of 6" guns, and I guess the AA crew were kept too busy on its starboard .

So.. I seized the opportunity , and got several salvos off at the closest possible range .

( As the photograph proves ) .

I had expected 15 would be enough , with luck , but my crew were so well trained and reloaded rapidly .

Oh we were so busy , we had no time to hoist the flag perhaps that inadvertently confused the Hood . ( well they should have known after the first salvo anyways )

Having a fast ship was useful , and engaging as close as possible .

Boarding the Hood did not seem a feasable option .

I was playing tactical patrol interdiction yesterday,(as an lfn sub) and I emptied my stock of torps into a german bb. About 90 torps hit, but the damn ship wouldn't sink!

I created a mission and set the BB as follows:

100% health

zero speed

zero ammo

zero ETA (located next to me)

Then I set my DD as follows:

100% health

zero speed

180 torpedos (Just to make sure I had plenty- also to see if the game or mission editor would crash)

I used all 180 torps.

It would not sink. So I finished it off with 40-50 rounds of 5 inch..

Now I knew I was close to sinking it but I didnt bring enough torps.

Then I recreated the mission and set the BB as follows:

5% health

zero speed

zero ammo

zero ETA (located next to me)

Then I set my DD as follows:

100% health

zero speed

180 torpedos

This time I used the torpedos slowly and counted 10 hits, it sank. Do the math and 10 torps reduces 5% BB health.. so you need 200 torpedoes.

The Fletcher DD I used had a reload time of 1 minute 30 seconds for each set of 8 torps.

This information is going to help me setup some scenarios that will more likely give players the feeling of being closer to simulation rather than arcade shooter where you need unlimited ammo to accomplish the task, and will help anyone designing missions that will cater to a different kind of crowd.

Later tonight I be checking the Fletcher 5 inch guns versus 5% BB health for the same reasons.

What depth did you set your torps at?

If you were hitting the armor belt.....

The real hood had a draft of 31 feet 6 inches.

Actually the Musashi, Yamato's sister ship survived 12 torpedo hits. It was 20 torpedo hits and 17 bombs that did her in.
