Come alongside a freighter, or just get to close...they uleash deck guns on you...which can really do a number on the hull and start a fire! (cant beleive i was driven under by a frieght ship! >;( )
My question is....what kind of gun is this supposed to be simulating?

In the game, if you click on the freighter blip on the radar and look in the large tactical display, it says what types of guns the freighter has. (they usually have one 3 or 4 inch gun). When theres more than one freighter, they can really do some damage!
Also, there were merchant ships with hidden guns in WWII (Q-ships) Maybe you tanagled with a q-ship?

When you get close enough they are also using AA guns on you (range ~800m)

It does not take much for an amateur with a gun to punch holes in your subs hull.
From what I understand, that's the way it was in WWII.
Keep your distance under the circumstances.

As far as I understand, the cargo vessels in the game are more like Armed Merchant Cruisers than standard merchantmen.

You'll notice the position of deck guns vary .
Many have them mounted to port .
Merchant and Tankers , forward and aft , respectively ..
Often if just outside AA gun range you can more safely surface to gain distance or such . if to starboard of them .
I once ordered a merchant to attack a sub , when ammunition was all used , and it , to my surprise dropped a depthcharge on it ...... so watch out !

hmm.. so hiding under a convoy of enemy freighters to prevent enemy DD's from dropping depth charges is not the perfect hiding spot some might think!

Only once occured , and it surprised me .
During german surface 4.
The dozen freighters were intact , and at some distance.
The last of the three subs was out of torpedoes.
I was out of torpedoes and depthcharges .
Hull was almost gone -speed minimal - perhaps ammo down too .
Last sub kept bobbing up to take a shot .
I reckoned ordering the freighters back to attack would finish the sub with their guns . so the sub would be finished off before it got me .
One explosion , then message .." has destroyed with depth charge ".
An unusual way to have the mission end.
