I have owned sub games in the past, namely "Silent Hunter" both 1&2. When submerged and under attack with depth charges, only one within 50 feet of a sub would do damage. In the Enigma, It seems that the DCs can sink a sub at any depth. This is not realist nor any fun. A sub can become invisable below a thermal layer at around 200+ ft. And torpedoes fired from a DE when the sub is below periscope depth is next to imposible during the war years that this game is suppose to represent. It seems that the sonar represented is far more sofiscated than it actully was. DE only sunk subs by dropping many DCs and only if the sub remained stopped. I like the game as far as the grafics is concerned, however, unless the developers change the reality, when "Silent Hunter III " arrives next year I will not be using Enigma.

Sorry gentlemen, but you are mistaken. Not about it being hard, but about the AI always winning. Couple of important things:
Most scenarios, the enemy has detected you. They will work off of your last known location and they will use cooperative tactics (if there are several of them) to hunt you. You have to be extremely sensitive to your speed in relation do their proximity and their speed. The faster you go, the easier you are to hear.
Are you taking advantage of the "invisible period" that lasts from the first DC explosion till 15 seconds after the last DC explosion?
Are you changing heading as well as depth? Are you going all stop once you start a dive, change heading and level off and go all stop at your deepest depth?
If you aren't using evasive tactics, you will get hammered. If you were able to see it in wireframe, you would see that the AI tend to drop a little deep and know how to lead you for the estimated position.
Also be sure to play on difficult mode. On easy mode you have more health and see more about the enemy, but they also see more about you, like your heading underwater....

You can add:
Easy: you have a greater visibility range but so does the AI
Easy: on the 500m "radar" objects appears as triangles (the stay round on diffecult)

BERNARD: Well, that seems very even handed of you, Minister.

Thanks to all that answered. I will try the difficult mode and let you all know what happens.

This is the image tidesofwar moderators keep removing.. ask them why? It seems helpful to most people..
The enigma preferences screen might be confusing "you" by making you think the easy button makes the game easy to play, in fact it makes it easy for the enemy to detect you, as well as you detect them, so try the difficult setting if you want stealth.

Surviving as a sub is very hard, it will take plenty of practice and replays, to master some tactics. And some luck....depth charges in real life could sink you from any depth, I think. Difficulty settings make a big difference. It will still be hard to avoid death at times from multiple attackers. If you fire beforehand to make one attacker veer off from a distance you can often isolate the other one.
