Start with the humble Life Jacket...swim your hapless commander to the safety of...a Life Raft! This is upgradable to the Whaleboat/Lifeboat, which has a small engine.
Pilots of planes would have a parachute, and swimming players may recieve shark attacks.
Some sinking ships would capsize, or stay afloat for a long time.
