Was this a feature that is inactive now, waiting for multiplayer?

Press it when you are outgunned and getting hammered and you may get some help from those allied ships which are nearest to you on the tactical map and are not already engaged in battle. If your other ships are already engaged they will end their own fight first before they join you - which is why it can seem as though this button does not work. Generally, it is better to make a run for it if you are outgunned and no-one is coming to help.
