Hey guys, I need help from someone that knows something about WWII German songs. I don't want to use any Nazi songs, or songs that are associated with the Party, in the playlist. I don't want the German govt coming after me for streaming Nazi propaganda into Germany. (They *will* come after folks in other countries. )

Some of the others are problematic, although not forbidden. Especially 'Deutschland ?ber alles'. The melody still is Germany's national anthem, but only the third of it's three verses is sung. Many people believe that the first verse (Deutschland ?ber alles) is forbidden (which is not true) and will protest.

See Torgy, Asking me those question at midnight is no good. Theres others that knows better.

That depends on the listener and where he or she is from.

Ade Polenland (literally 'Good bye, Poland') is basically a song about parting, but may be offensive for Polish people.

Der Tod in Flandern (literally 'Death in Flandres') is about WW I. I just remember the tune, not the exact lyrics, so I'm not sure about this one.

Deutschland heiliges Deutschland ('Germany holy Germany') is a song from the late 18th century, so basically there's nothing wrong about this, although it's meaning might be seen differently in the light of the Nazi dictatorship.

Unsere Fahne Flattert Uns Voran (literally 'Our flag waves in front of us') is a song 'composed' by Baldur von Schierach, leader of the Hitlerjugend. It's free of direct propaganda, nevertheless it's a song sung by the Hitlerjugend.

Maybe the last one causes most trouble, so I'd suggest you simply leave it out. The others... Well, it really depends on the point of view. There are people who are offended by 'Ich hatt' einen Kameraden' which is still sung at rememberance day services in Germany, although it neither praises war nor does it contain Nazi propaganda.

Just out of curiosity, are the songs actually legally banned in Germany, or just officially looked down upon. I thought that you only were not allowed to deny the Holocaust, and doesn't something of a Nazi party still exist in Germany, just like there is a Nazi party in the US???

There are right wing parties in Germany, but they don't play any political role, although they still have followers. The right extremist parties are closely watched by the Verfassungsschutz (Federal German Office for the Protection of the Constitution). There are Neonazis, mainly young people from problematic areas (i.e. areas with high unemployment),.

And the songs are not completely banned (you may play them for documentary reasons of any kind). It's the same with the swastika flag. You must not show it in public, it must not be shown in computer games, but it's no problem to show swastikas in movies, TV series and documentaries as well as in printed media (including school books)
