Hitting Ships

Hi all,
I just got Enigma and I like it a lot but intuitive it's not . For instance, what's the purpose of the "right mouse clicked" crosshair icon on the tactical periscope? In other words how do I use it to calculate when I stood fire my torpedo? I haven't a clue on how to eyeball the ships. For instance how far ahead should I lead a ship? And at what zoom? There doesn't seem to be any guide at all to figure this out. I remember something about in real - life subs they can use the side notches on the tactical to estimate how far away a ship was by "measuring" the smoke stacks with the notches. In other words (and this is not the real estimates) a one notch high stack means the ship is a thousand yards away, two notchesmeans two thousand yards, etc.
Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.
