Lo all, great thread, taken me ages to absorb what everyone's said tho. Me slow!
And before I start, nice post Vipor m8
Here's MHO, if it looks long, just read first few lines of each section then scan over the rest
1. Pilot Tags
Tags with no clear name in them (inside visible name or outside) is BORING! (more below on this)
I'd love to see all pilots have a recognisable name in their tag, but doesn't have to be in first visible chars. But if people want to be boring and decide by majority otherwise, I'd want to atleast see the current system of having a registered tag that refs can check against AND have power to refuse unrecognisable ones to fly.
Like Temper said, if I killed Temper with a tag like Evil_B and I was TKFM_K the current usual fun of him hunting my ass, and vice versa and the laughs we usually have as a result would be non-existent. Or indeed of a great kill worth praising and remembering for another time, and the following respect that brings.
All online games for me are primarily fun because of the relationships you build with other players, whether good or bad. Especially in matches when the highs and lows are much more extreme, and for me atleast the majority of my AA time! I know for one that when more players change to an unrecognisable tag, the less fun I get out of the game. And the more likely I am to turn my back on the game and find something else.
Turn that away from enemy tags and on to your own team tags. THAT is why TKFM will NEVER (atleast whilst I'm C/O) change away from tags that clearly show who they are.
It's the case that some TKFM prefer to hide their name out of the characters that show over their plane, and only show in comms and on the log, etc. But that's good because you can still interact.
On a tactical basis, we also prefer to be able to identify our own for calls on TS. Sure this could be done with letters, but again that for me means a crapper relationship with the player. E.g. it's far more fun for someone to be able to shout "FFS Gelp you've got someone on your arse AGAIN! Lol", rather than "FFS K you've got someone on your arse AGAIN!"
That's my humble opinion.
2. Team numbers
I agree with several guys before, and control it so it can't be abused, however I've not really seen it abused yet, and I'm not convinced it needs control. BUT TKFM have been lucky by generally winning. So Control is a good idea for the best of other squads, BUT what's the best way. I propose the same as Vipor (darn it) but slight change.
Same number of pilots in both halves (can change pilots around to allow sitters a go). UNLESS both C/Os agree otherwise. (still use 6 minimum rule)
The issue is all around balance between the risks and advantages of two results:
A team fielding 7 or more GE, then forcing 6 v 6 when they're GB
against
A team losing a pilot and having to face a 6 v 7 half or even a whole match! eeek
Personally I'd hate to see both happen, and I see the 2nd issue happen more often, but of course the current rules ensure that a team isn't penalised by having enemy reduce their team at start of 2nd half.
That's why I wouldn't really want the rule changed, but would be happy to give it a go, provided C/Os can agree to be flexible. Personally if an enemy team lost a player, I'd happily drop a pilot to even it, no matter if he might be lying. If it seemed dodgy after, I'd just hate them for it and hunt their asses down in future
The only risk of a C/O being flexible in this way would be to lose any advantage they would get by having even numbers. Which should be none? hehe
Oh and Noodles, cc we have been lucky, but we have lost key pilots, like Yaff and Md and many more I forget right now. However, we've been lucky in that the rules have had the minimum pilots reduced to what we can just manage regularly. We usually get 6-10 regularly, but have struggled with nearly 5 recently.
And we've not recruited because of this, and because the supply is low indeed, and other squads need them. Bit of a crazy and yeah lucky balancing act here on numbers
