Well....
For me ..a made for TV movie in 1973 called DEATH RACE.aka STATE OF DIVISION...with Lloyd Bridges as a command of a Nazi Panzer tank.and Doug McClure as an American fighter pilot whose crippled P-40 plane is pursued across the North African desert by the tank commander. bash:
But for Navy War flixs..its TORA,TORA,TORA..

The Longest Day (beats SPR by a millions miles)
Bridge too Far
are the best 2 WW2 films ever made
As to naval well it has to be Master and Commander:)

Hornblower was an order of magnitude better than Master & Commander. The latter was an entertaining film, but a bit too much Hollywood for my liking.
Also, C S Forrester was a far better historian than Patrick O'Brien.

"Apocalypse Now" just because of that awesome scene with the choppers with "Flight of the Valkries" playing. Though it is a rather mind screwing film.
I enjoyed "We Were Soldiers" with Mel Gibson.
one thing that iritates me about "Saving Private Ryan" is the complete lack of Brits. We could have just walked on and given a little wave or something wave: . Perhaps if the Americans had asked we could have told them where Private Ryan was!
I think "Das Boot" is however the most awesome Naval film.
You Reckon "Hunt for the Red October has reached classic status yet?"

Hmm that is a very debateable point I find that patrick o'Brian is a far better writer then CS Forrester. As to the Hornblower which version do you refer to the film or the Tv films?

it has been a good easter here,
Yesterday they showed "Guns of Navarone" on tv here, and right now they show "Brigde over river Kwai"
