A quick question: How much do you spend hosting a server for an online game? Do you know what the average monthly fee for server hosting is? Perhaps there is an avenue available there...

I'm not into hosting myself but I'm alwaysw bumping into people who, when they go loony over a game, don't hold back on this kind of investment.
What are you looking for? be very specific and I'll pry.

Was just seeing how familiar you are with it. It can run from $35 per month to several hundred for server hosting. It's only "free" to the player who doesn't host.
What if we offered individual squadron SERVER hosting? If you were permitted onto that server as a player you could play for free. It would still allow us to control our technology but provide an alternate level or style of play and potentially be economically feasible.

So far, what you're telling me is obvious.

I see additional potential here. How would it compare to Enigma's full-size world?

I hesitate as I may be restating the obvious
It could be the same map and layout as the persistent universe as we would likely want to minimize duplication of effort - that would be cost prohibitive.

So then what downside is there to this scheme? None is apparent to me so far.

It would require people willing to pony up for the server hosting and Admin access.

Are these servers under TesserAction's control or can anyone owning their own hardware host?

...like Tides of War, for example?

It would have to be TAG controlled. Perhaps under license to places like TIDES. The biggest issue is containing the server technology. It cannot get into the public and licensing could allow that to happen.
