I agree, animated sprites would be an atrocity.
Polygonal characters inside the subs would also be iffy.
But I stand by my opinion of the twenty-second prep for dive thing. It's just wierd as it stands.
Then again, if you were to rig things such that the game only made sailors visible to the captain of the ship, and then only rendered and animated a polygonal sailor object when they were in your field of vision, I doubt it would do too much to knock down performance.
Hell, you can always make the little guys an option in the Preferences menu.
And how would people cause lag? If it were to follow the "you can only see your own crew" idea, the crew people of your ship are being kept track of locally on your computer and not displayed to others. And if it's universal, the computer on the other end can just infer for itself the appropriate posture animation from the orientation of the AA gun that's already being sent. So that wouldn't boost lag in any way I can think.

Yes thats a good idea.
I guess I look too much into MP, because as soon as thats in I may never play the single side again, as MP is so much more fun

I think not having humans in the game removes alot of the realism you have to remember navl warfare or and warfare that has been recorded has humans in it I think not having humans doesnt show the sacrifice the crew gave for there ship it was not a battle of the ghost ships it was still a man vs man battle as You guys should encorperate a system kinda like the MOH:pacific thingy (the one that had pearlh harbor) life boats, people swiming when there ship was destroyed shooting there aa guns and other stuff you guys should put out a patch that has a big red warning not to dl this if you are under 13 years of age or something like that and then have it be an option in the settings menu but make them be LOD because if there like 1700 yards out you dont want full detail but if there super close like a broadside attack or your own crew you would want to see them
im not so sure you would want them for mp as they would affect your latency ratings on the server but give it a try m8s

Devs,
It is a great game. Really makes those of us who have sailed and conned remember. Lag inducers are not something I care about. I also appreciate the business decision to keep this teen rated and that the game must meet certain criteria to remain so. We all realize you will continue to improve on this game and look forward to your next patch whatever it may contain.

You could get rid of the lag issue if crew were player-side only, the way "karma" and other dead-body systems work in fps games.
The only thing that matters is that the enemy is dead, everyone sees slightly different falling body animations, etc. [for fps games]
For crew, the exact action taking place would be seen differently for each player, or not seen at all (if crew are turned off), adding human presence when wanting and not introducing a lag issue.

I am in the "People belong on ships" camp myself. When I was in the Navy it was an eery feeling going onto mothballed ships in the pier for re-enlistment ceremonies, dignitary visits and such. Playing this game solo without seeing another person or rather image of another person is eery. Almost like being on a ghost ship, something a true sailor would never want to be confronted with.
This game most assuredly needs to see some kind of interaction with others on baord. The captain cannot run the vessel entirely by himself. There are crew billets created on every vessel for the soul purpose of running the ship efficiently.
This game should be no different. There should be casualties taken to the crew and the ship's compliment should suffer the loss as well, resulting in either poor performance or low morale. It would add a sense of realism that the game lacks.
Perhaps I am the lone dissenter in this forum, who truly beleives that the addition of crewmembers would be a worthwhile endeavor.

They can't do casualties, as it would raise their ESRB rating and hurt sales. Most people here seem positively inclined toward it except where they believe it would degrade performance during gameplay.

One way to do it would be to draw sailors at their positions, and when hits register where they are they just "disappear". It would also make it so if you lose too many men the ships performance would suffer.
