What if using the "Travel" Mode was optional, you could always sail the old fasioned way and then check a map to see were you are. So if you need to return to port to sign off, (If your going out to a friends suddenly) then you can jump into "travel" mode and get back to port alot faster then the amount it took to get were you currently are.

Hmmm... What I suspect might develop is something like this....
  • User Logs In
  • User selects a port to depart from
  • Manually travels to world at large
  • When its time for them to log off or travel to another area: Hit Return to Port
  • At port you can log out or swtich to another port in another area
Here we can get a virtual way to get time compression. You can still travel across the world but, you do it through the ports. So there would never be people flying about at tremendous speeds. Everyone would still be traveling at normal speeds its just that they would be able to come into an area and then plod along like ususal. This of course needs to be worked on so that people can't just Return to Port in the middle of a battle.

My memory is fuzzy but I think this is one of the things that East said that ages ago they wanted to implement in the MP version.

Yea, but people having the option would unbalance the game.
Anything online needs to all run along the same lines, otherwise there aer far to many chances for players to find ways to abuse the system.

Although you, or myself may not do it. I can tell you know there will be atleast a small group of people who will.
I'm referring to single-player. The MP situation would be different.

I thought we were talking about MP... We were discussing SP??? For SP I think time compression would be just fine. Its just for MP I care about.

Well, I was pushing for TC in SP, but having the option in MP would be cool if had to be "all in".

my two penneth worth

SP time compression is not needed as the game stands now, however if it expands to a world like in SH3 then of course it will be needed because i certainly dont have the time to go across the world in real time.

As to MP depends on the game set up

Good point naturally. As of the moment Enigma dumps you right into battle where you have been spotted or detected most time. So time compression is useless... But MP will be the real tricky wicket and I suspect they will in fact lean towards the port idea. Its so much easier to implement and balance.

I'd like to have TC as a option, but if the missions stay like they are now, I don't think I'd use it. Image

I wouldn't mind not having TC if I could hvae a savegame option

you may have seen this before bbbuuuutttt...

Time Compression is a tricky subject. but put it in for those like myself who get bored waiting to get somewhere and those who dont like it dont have to use it. its very simple.

Personally I believe the TC should be an option espically when traveling long distances.

The set up could be made to use the TC within a certain area CFS3 has this setup when in use if an enemy is spotted the TC automatically stops, this gives you time to decide to engage the enemy or try to elude them. It also stops with plenty of time/distance for each to dectect the other.

As for sending out ships in several directions (scouting) to locate the enemy I say why not? Aircraft were used to scout for enemy and would report course and size back to base.

One ship/sub locates the enemy, radios the fleet of amount of ships, size and course then there will be time to get one heck of a battle going, however there should be "X" amount of time/distance from the enemy using TC which would be a must also allowing the enemy to prepare for the engagement or evasion. While they are preparing to engage a single target your fleet would have the option of closing in.

I don't feel comfortable with the idea of using TC to get so close to a target undetected that all one needs to do is pop up and blast away, that would take the fun out of the hunt.

Sounds very interesting although it should be an option.

Enigma is a great game the compression it has now is excellent however going into the future options need to be kept open.
