The only problem with increasing the visible range is almost no one has a powerfull enough computer to view it.

perhaps using really low poly models for ranges over 4km could help?
I noticed that some freithers still have things like railings modelled while being somewhere between 3,5km and 5km away.

Or perhaps a slider that lets you select visability distance based on PC power, kind of like the one found in Operation Flashpoint.
Only problem with that is that someone with a smoking system could kill someone with a low end system before they could even see them. SO I guess maybe this isn't a good idea, balance wise.

They need more big ships in the game. In real life, the oceans were not ruled by destroyers and submarines. They were ruled by battleship.
I disagree. First, 1 on 1, a properly equiped Aircraft Carrier would easily defeat even the best Battleship. But let's assume you meant in a close quarters fight, with no outside help (like planes).
In that case, let's say you choose the Hood. If I get an equivelant number of tons, I would chose the PT Boat. Yes, the PT Boat. Because, if I get equal tonnage (to make it fair) then you must consider: The Hood is 42,100 tons. The American PT Boat is 60. That leaves me just over 700 PT Boats for your Hood. No contest.
Let's then, for the sake of fairness, limit myself to a mere 30. It would still be a no contest. The big guns of a BB are simply no match for a PT Boat's speed or torpedoes. Sure, you might kill 20 or more, but not before they got there torpedoes off. Combined, we carry over 30 torps, enough to sink even the Hood, and it makes a big target up close.

BB gun ranges are greater than that of torpedoes's. And they MUST increase visible distance, this is the ocean after all.
It's quite hard to hit a higly maneuverable, fast moving target with a slow firing gun at extreme ranges. As long as a PT Boat is within range of a BB's main guns but out of secondary armament's range I'd say that the odds are even. One hit, and the PT Boat is down, but you must hit it first.

If PT boats were so good, they would have been used much more during world war II...so if we see PT boats owning the seas when mp comes out, we know we got some realism issues... notify: I would hate to see a game like this be exploited by a little PT boat!! huh:

OK, probably my posting was a little missleading. When a PT Boat is within main gun range of a BB but out of range of secondary, it will be quite hard to hit the small PT Boat.
But: Secondary armamant still has a tremendous range, and PT Boats usually must get quite close to fire their torpedoes with a acceptable chance of hitting. The PT Boat has good chances of surviving while outside the range of the secondary battery of a BB. That's still a lot of distance, usually too far away to fire the torpedoes.
The PT Boats advantages are: Low profile (=difficult to spot), very high speed, extreme maneuverability. Disadvantages: Can't take much damage, are limited to hit and run tactics, usually limited to coastal waters and/or good weather conditions.
PT Boats were used a lot during the war, by all participants. The Kriegsmarine for example built several hundreds of various types of these boats (some mainly from wood) and used them extensively in the English Channel. The USA used them in the pacific. All participants used them in the Mediterranean.
It's quite tough to get a PT Boat close enough to a BB to fire the torpedoes, but as history shows you can even get a dinghy loaded up with explosives close enough to a destroyer to cause major damage...

I noticed there haven't been very many mentionings of submarines lately, but then again that's probably because I've been performing an amazing disappearance act lately.
Being an alternate history game I figure this is worth a suggestion.
Submarine gun cruisers could progress into merchant raiders or other light tasks. Scrapped in real life due to problems with ammunition hoists, maybe Enigma could over-come this?
This is a brief quote from Jane's Submarines: War Beneath the Waves:
"The Royal Navy produced the experimental X1, designed to destroy all armed merchants, armed with the new semi-automatic 5.2-inch/42cal. Mk 1 quick-firing gun in two twin bulbous turrets mounted fore and after the conning tower. A total of 104 rounds were carried per gun."
According to that book I've got infront of me, the ship required 58 crewmembers to man the guns and rearm them.
---------
Not to forget my other favorite, France's Surcouf, armed with a cruiser's twin 8-inch 50cal. model 1924 guns in a turret forward of the conning tower. This particular submarine also carried a Besson/ANF Mureaux MB 411 scout aircraft.
I could dig up some pictures for you, but I've got to instruct a drill class tomorrow morning, and need sleep badly. hehe:

Hmm.
Especially Surcouf had more problems than just ammunition hoists.
The twin 8in guns had a low rate of fire, and a submarine hull usually isn't build to withstand shelling. Engaging a warship while surfaced would have been lethal, and for attacking merchant ships you don't need such large guns.
