I always thought the idea of a battle carrier was stupid. As hardcore as they look, the idea, in my opinion, makes no tactical sense. In order to conduct flight ops the carrier has to be sailing into wind to give the aircraft enough headwind to get airborn. As soon as you get into a situation to get those big guns into play your pretty much screwed. Shells are gonna be blowing your planes up on the deck. And your gonna need to move your giant ironing board into a position to get a fireing solution so you certainly cannot continue flight operations. A carriers strength lies in its airborne assets. If the enemy are approcahing your carrier you want to run away. OK so those big turrets are a wonderfully hardcore backup if you do get caught, but an expensive one. I'd much rather be faster so i can run away and leave the dedicated bcs and bbs to kill the enemy.

Well said. Perhaps she could house a pen for motor torpedo boats in her hull for sea defense?

Battlecruisers are illogical, they are too heavy and expensive. If you mounted the guns, you would have to severly limit the air fleet. If you had a good air fleet, you'd only have room for very small guns, no match for torpedo bombers.

Still, they should make a mini-mod for use in LAN games that includes a battle carrier. Cool concept.

And yes, the whole concept proved to be useless during WWII (see Japanese battlecarrier conversion ISE).

But once again: It's a different history. Enigma will obviously see the advance of battlecarriers and admirals who put them to good use.

Reading about the Baltic Sea at wartimes I stumbled over something very interesting today. I found that there indeed had been a ship which can be compared to Battlecarriers (although it was by far smaller). I'm talking about the Swedish aircraft carrying cruiser GOTLAND.

GOTLAND was basically a combination of a light cruiser with 6 6in guns (twin turret forward, twin turret aft, one single casemate turret each on starboard and port) and a minelayer (carrying 80 - 100 mines). It was equipped with an aft flight deck (which covered roughly 1/3 of the ship) and a catapult which could be turned just like torpedo tubes. GOTLAND carried Hawker Osprey floating planes and was constructed to carry eleven of these planes. The Swedish navy never had the funds to operate that many planes, at no point more than 6 Ospreys had been aboard.

GOTLAND was ordered in 1927, launched on September 14th 1933 and entered service in December 1934. Displacement was about 5500 tons.

Although the concept was ingenious the rapidly advancing carrier technology made GOTLAND obsolete soon. Additionally aircraft operation were drastically limited by bad weather, and soon it was clear that it was cheaper for Sweden to operate land based aircraft. In 1943 GOTLANDs flight deck was removed and the ship turned into an AA cruiser. GOTLAND was decommissioned in 1960 and sold for scrap.
