Perhaps, now I have the Gold version and everything is running perfectly for the first time since I set eyes on this game, it is time to update this thread in case anyone looks at it in the future.

Shortly after my last triumphant post back in March of this year I got the same stutter problem again and gave up in the face of adversity with a problem that was clearly beyond my problem solving capabilities. The refresh rate fix did not fix this problem and I was playing Enigma with the UK patch A only until I got the Gold edition this month. I am happy to report that I have not had the stutter problem at all with the Gold edition unless I crank up AA to 4X and Aniso to 2X, which is probably asking for trouble anyway given that I am running a lowly 2GHz AMD with 1Gig of RAM and a GF FX 5700 Ultra card. Its great, at last, to be able to see the graphical/user improvements and new ships added to this game over the last year.

Hello, first time poster here. I too, was having severe frame rate problems, esp in CQB w/small cannon and MG firing all over the place. Nothing would help in game, so I poked around in my video card control panel and turned VSYNC from software controlled to OFF. Works like a champ now. Now if I can get past US 10a alive...

Turning vsync off was one of the many things I tried when I had the original version fully patched up and it made no difference whatsoever. All that vsync does if you turn it off is limit the frame rate to the refresh rate of you monitor ie. 60fps for me (LCD) and usually 85fps (85hz) for CRTs. As even 60 fps should be more than enough to run this game smoothly I saw no difference. On my CRT last year (85hz) it also made no difference.

Even in the Gold edition if I have AA and Aniso turned up to 4X things get choppy in campaign action sequences with many ships, planes and smoke. It gets better if I turn the particles and the detailed sea options off in the preferences and becomes quite playable.

How much RAM in your video card? Is it AGP or PCI? I have an Athlon 2500+, Win XP Pro, 1GB RAM and a GeForce 4 Ti 4200 128MB video card. I'm running the Australian Gold version at 1024x768 and running Fraps in the background, plus my firewall, Norton, and whatever else. Haven't seen any slowd-downs.

Maybe it's the amount of RAM in the video card? Here's a movie clip I made and was well over 40 fps while doing it: Giving Kaiser Willie a Bloody Nose

Its True, I rescently had to upgrade my dx version from 8.1 to 9.0 (beta) not alpha.
I also run a nvida geforce mx 440 video card ( slighty modified) and I was told

by an in game buddy in Eq to use the 53.03 drivers,, that the others were bugged

or not had the wqrl certificiate?

Anyways, Indeed 53.03 are the drivers you need to use and maybe someone could make a link pertaining to this driver issues and make it a sticky thread>

Fyen
I used to have a MX 440 but since found out they are not compatible with alot of new games (pasific assult wont run at all) so i bought FX 5700LE works perfect on every game....

two things generally help alot:

set your min and max swap file size to the same value (at least 1024)

and set your audio hardware acceleration to basic.

This of course supposes that your anti-virus software is off and your drivers are all current.
