I also used the dive right in method. You can actually engage before you see them on radar so go to Battle Stations right away and ahead flank and hard to port. I set tubes to port and headed N X NE. I took out the the group coming in from the NE and let the CVs take out the ones coming from the NW. Keep all guns to bear on any target that tries to line up a Torp shot on you. If you can get past the torps, you got em. I got the group to chase me to the East pulling them away from the fleet and then doubled back to help the CV's. I think I got about 5 or 6 PT's and a couple of planes. I took one torp and a bomb from a plane but I survived and so did most of the fleet.

Just can't get past this one. I've tried this mission about 30 times using all sorts of different tactics, and usually get the convoy blown out from under me. Any other ideas or tactics????
Perhaps those things always go together? I'm really good at evading incoming torps but have problems using them myself...

I just reran this one cause it's been a while. I took 2 torps but survived. Not real pretty but I lived through it. It seems my method works (barely this time)

I actually found another, slightly time consuming way to beat this mission. For the longest time I was stuck (probably tried at least 10 times or so) and then after reading this thread I decided to try it once more.
While playing I thought, I have twelve merchant ships, each of them has a three incher, I can command them, 12 guns on one target, only two hits to sink each target....Schweet! So I paused the game and had all the merchants target 1 MTB and I readjusted them as necessary sometimes only targeting 4 or 5 ships to MTB. This had an unintended side effect. In addition to blowing the crap out of the MTB's the tankers also turned towards the swarm offering a greatly reduced target profile. (head on vs. broadside, and you know how much fun those Vospers are to aim. Damn MilchCows!!
)
Anyhow, it only took me two more tries to do the mission this way, I would have made it the first time, I smoked the swarm with only 2 or 3 losses, but I wasn't paying attention while I waited for time to run out and a tanker hit me
Anyhow just thought I would post my strategy for those who are desperate enough to try anything

I've been doing exactly that on my last three trie's and every time they just manage to kill 5. I even in some cases HIT the torpido's to try and stop them, but nothing sees to be working....
I'll keep trying but... I'll have to get back to you on that.. heh

Try using P to pause the game , and then make sure you are targetting the nearest enemy . As soon as one is sunk,,, Target another !

I'm on attempt 10, starting to get frustrating. It seems that its the first 4 minutes that are so crucial. Looking over my logs it always seems I lose 3 ships in the first 4 minutes. (Though I am improving)

If every campaign is like this, I may just shelve it 'til MP comes out.
It would be interesting to see what the average number of attempts is before mission success. Any takers? (IMO, on EASY you should be able to finish in less than 10 )
Maybe start tracking that stuff for all missions, good way to see if a mission may need some tweaking.
Also have some future suggestions that I will post in the appropriate place.
