Actually, avoiding a return salvo is very easy. At about 1200-1500 metres, call for a hard port or starboard and let loose a spread of 8. If you hold the turn for 180 degress, you should easily have evaded any torpedoes the AI releases.
The AI doesn't seem to use fan spreads -- they use parallel salvoes (or something close to it at this range). If they pulled a complementary hard turn and loosed at the same time that you do, things would be quite a bit harder.
Also, if you're going to approach both destroyers head on, you should try to do it on the reciprocal to pass at about 300-400 metres. This should screen you from the second destroyer's guns, and expose you to only 3 enemy guns.
The AI seems to be a much better marksman than my own AI. Running straight away from the AI, my 4 guns seem to score fewer hits than his 1. Course, that may just be the ouch factor as well as the difficulty of observing splashes in the arc 175-185 -- I'd have thought that the directors should be above the rigging.
