What do you think it'd be like shooting out of a smoke screen in real life?
Makes sense to me...

Basically think about it being like a night action no visibility but radar was used to target ships during WW2. Which means that Smoke is only really useful against ships without radar.

What's that thing in the lower right hand corner? Don't tell me you've been tricking me this whole time...
And if it isn't radar, how do the BC's hit you from 6k meters?
I'll bet I'm just being stupid again :oD

That's a tactical display that shows data from all sources in a "radar" sweep format - there is no radar.

well you live a learn!!
However think about it laying down smoke was a standard tactic during the First World War so why not have it in the game. It aint going to help against sub's anyway but at least it could protect against surface ships.

RTM... phfff.... :oD
I don't understand how that would work. I mean, I understand how you'd do it, I just don't understand. Unless you laid out smoke from all angles of the ship, the enemy could shoot you - from back, they shoot in front, from sides, they shoot in the middle... even if you put it all around, they could just shoot smack dab into the middle. And as long as it wasn't too big of a circle they could prolly fit a spread inside of it.
I could see how it would work with subs... spread it all around right above them... run away & pivot... they surface to shoot, but can't see anything... you peg 'em with torps and if you're a poor shot drop some cans before they get to deep. Why am I telling you this!?!? I'm a sub cap...

Remember in that period the best targeting system was the Mark 1 eyeball. And you could not shoot at what you could not see because you dont know ifd you hit or not. It is a case of fire check where you shot landed and fire again with changed angles.
As to smoke around the ships, this is not how it was used. It is a tactic that was generally used in fleet actions where ships fought in formations at a distance so you sent out a destroyer or two to screen your big ships with smoke. It also depended upon the wind as well.
And they still did not used smokeless powder in the guns during WW1 so you had the added factor of gunsmoke.
