Captains – we launched a brand new feature on PC yesterday, including new UI and the ability to donate duty officers of up to Very Rare quality. Unfortunately, due to some internal communication issues, this feature went live without any prior warning or documentation. That’s on us, but we’re putting this guide together today in the hopes of helping everyone understand what is happening. This guide will be written in the form of an FAQ, and will be updated as new information or questions become available. Thanks for your time and understanding.
What kind of duty officers can I now donate to fleet projects?
You’ll be able to donate any duty officer of any quality up to Very Rare to projects at the Fleet Starbase. Other Fleet Holdings will become a part of this system in 2023.
Why was this change made?
We felt that fleet projects were being gated for players who had filled their duty officer roster, and couldn’t recruit common quality duty officers to donate to projects. Some players were following the system of taking a higher quality bridge officer to the Academies and breaking it down into lower quality officers, but this process was lengthy and not intuitive. By allowing you to donate those higher officers directly, and get more progress for doing so, the hope was that you would be able to progress your fleet projects more smoothly.
In addition, we do hope that removing this gating allows folks to donate more dilithium to projects, and therefore helps the exchange at least a little. Time will tell if that actually has an effect.
How do I protect myself from accidentally donating duty officers I’d like to keep?
You can right click on any duty officer in your roster, or in the donation window itself, and choose “Change protected status to on.” This will remove them from the donation window and prevent you from donating them.
However, some players have discovered an issue where this protection does not work on every officer, all the time. We’re getting a fix put in ASAP, but in the meantime, please be very careful and cognizant of what officers you are putting up for donation.
If a Duty Officer is Bound to me or my account, are they protected automatically?
No. Binding status does not protect a duty officer from being donated. If you’d like to protect that officer from donation, make sure to set them to protected.
What are the different rarities of Duty Officer worth to a project?
The various Duty Officers are worth a number of “points” depending on their rarity. Previously, all Common Duty Officers would provide one progress to a project, or one “point.” The way it works for other Duty Officers is as follows:
Common (white): 1 point, 300 fleet credits
Uncommon (green): 3 points, 900 fleet credits
Rare (blue): 9 points, 2,700 fleet credits
Very rare (purple): 27 points, 8,100 fleet credits
What if I donate too many points worth of duty officers, accidentally?
The “points” you’ve contributed over the level needed to fill a project will go into a Duty Officer Coffer, which is viewable from the Fleet Window. In 2023, you will be able to use those points to fill other projects.
This sounds like sort of…half a system, with most of the major features coming in 2023. Why is that?
A technical issue with how we produce updates for our game forced our hand. We had to put some of the feature out, so we released the parts that were working correctly. Originally, this entire feature was slated to launch in 2023.
Can I donate dilithium instead of duty officers?
Yes! You can donate dilithium at a rate of 300 dilithium to one duty officer “point.”
What issues are you currently aware of?
Besides the issue mentioned above with some duty officers not having protection when they should, it also seems that you cannot donate only dilithium at this time. You have to donate a duty officer as well as the dilithium to make it work. We’re getting a fix in ASAP.
The “quality” filter on the donation screen is also currently nonfunctional. When it works, you’ll be able to filter the list to just the quality of duty officer you’d like to donate, which is an additional layer of protection for those rarer duty officers you want to protect. We’ll have that fix in ASAP as well.
Sounds like that dilithium issue might be affecting your stated goal of having this feature help the exchange.
Sure is!
When can we expect fixes to some of the issues we’re experiencing with this new feature?
Some of those fixes will likely be added in this week without any downtime necessary. The rest we are aiming to have fixed in a patch next week.
How did a change this big go out without any communication to the players?
Since Cryptic went full remote two years ago, almost every aspect of our business has transitioned smoothly. However, there have been occasional communication breakdowns. In this case, our Community Manager (me) was aware the change was coming, but not that it was coming this week. The folks working on the feature delivered it when they were supposed to, but their patch notes never made it in front of the person who compiles those notes. A combination of minor errors that lead to a bigger one. We’re really grateful for your patience, Captains, and thanks for understanding.
Nonetheless, we think this will be a great improvement to quality of life, and we hope you can build more fleet projects, faster than ever before. We’ll see you out in the final frontier.

This will retroactively resolve for Captains who had previously purchased the buyout.

Hunger is universal, and feasts are times of joy. Sadly, some species express the drive in unsociable ways. While many gather with loved ones and share communal meals, in the cold reaches of space another kind of hunger stirs, one more akin to locust swarm behavior than family bonding. Either way, the delicious feast begins for PC Captains on November 15th and lasts until December 6th!
A new event is here, featuring two crunchy TFOs, “Bug Hunt” (Ground) and “Swarm” (Space). Play each day to earn your way to this Event’s Grand Prize, the Universal Kit Module – V’ger Probes, which summons V’ger Probes that seek out Foes and severely damage any that stray too close! Keep reading for details on this item, how you can participate in the Event, and what additional prizes may be earned.
Universal Kit Module – V’ger Probes
When this ability is activated, V’ger Probes are summoned and move toward foes, causing severe damage in close proximity. The three probes deal significant Plasma damage over time and will continue to seek new Foes even if the original targets are defeated.
Upon claiming this Grand Prize (whether earned or purchased), your account will immediately become eligible for Bonus Progress. The first Bonus Progress rewarded will be accompanied by a reward of 8,000 Dilithium Ore. Earning Bonus Progress each day thereafter will increase this reward by an additional 1,000, and we have increased the cap on how high this value may scale to a value that is unreachable during this Event (thus effectively unlimited!).
This Featured Event is the fifth and finl of a series of upcoming Events that will participate in the fourth installment of our multi-event system known as an Event Campaign. Captains will also have the option to purchase their remaining progress in the event with Zen. The price for this buyout will be pro-rated, based on the amount of progress a Captain has completed.
We’re pleased to announce the return of the Research and Development Weekend! This event will run from December 24th at 8AM PT (17:00 CET) to Monday, December 28th at 10AM PT (19:00 CET), and features several bonuses throughout STO that will give Captains of all levels a leg up advancing their rank in the Research and Development school(s) of their choice.
For those Captains looking specifically for extra help with their projects, all R&D packs throughout the game will give out an extra 25% of the items they currently disperse for the duration of this event. Queue R&D Material Reward Packages (Normal, Advanced and Elite) will reward 25% more R&D Materials and have a chance to reward a Catalyst.
Alternatively, Captains wanting to advance through Research and Development schools as fast as possible should seek out Harvest Nodes, located in mission maps throughout STO, which will not only disperse 2 extra R&D Materials each time they are used, but will also reward 10 Dilithium Ore and have a chance to give out a R&D Catalyst during this event.
For all Captains that work on a Research and Development project during this weekend event, those projects will reward an extra 50% of the appropriate Research and Development School XP. This includes projects to make components as well as those to make items.

As you scan and capture particles you’ll help to train the cadet, and in exchange your faction will release a new random Duty Officer to you. The more particles you scan, the better the quality of the officer you can claim!
Scan a minimum of 5 traces to be rewarded a Common Duty Officer

From across the quadrants, Captains of all species and creeds understand the value of occasionally pushing themselves to the limits – to find out just how far their equipment, and their willpower, can take them, and just how much fight they can muster when the situation is at its direst. Screw your courage to its sticking place, and dive headlong into these classic tests of mettle – dare to face the No Win Scenarios.
This Event will include multiple TFOs previously featured individually in a combined Featured Event that will allow players to choose their preferred test each day, while earning Daily Progress toward a new grand prize reward. Defend the Kobayashi Maru in a starship-based simulation in a hazard-strewn space environment, or take on wave after wave of randomized enemy encounters within the dangerous confines of the Arena of Sompek.
Participating in this Event will give all players the opportunity to win a Flyable Freighter and Epic-Quality Admiralty Ship for their entire account! Keep reading for details on these items, how you can participate in the Event, and what additional prizes may be earned.
Take the Tests Again
Two existing activities will be participating in this Event:
Arena of Sompek – Ground TFO
In the interest of strengthening the Alliance against its enemies, and providing entertainment, the Klingons have agreed to allow other members to participate in the legendary qaD HoS event. You’ve been invited to Qo’noS to participate as representatives of the Alliance. It will be good practice for the battles ahead, and should be good for morale.
The Event version of the simulation ends after you complete Round 7.
Kobayashi Maru – Space TFO
The legendary Kobayashi Maru simulation has been updated to represent more of the risks of the modern galactic environment. Defend the ill-fated E.C.S. Kobayashi Maru from attackers amidst increasingly-dangerous waves of enemies, while avoiding randomized obstacles and hazards.
The Event version of the simulation ends after you complete Round 6.
While most of the action players will engage in during these TFOs have not changed for this event, a few minor adjustments have been made to each that will be present for the length of this Event’s run:
As noted above, each has a fixed duration during this Event. Prior to the designated ending point, neither can be failed.
During this Event, the Untimed/Infinite versions of these TFOs will be temporarily disabled.
Each completion will reward a Choice of All Marks (replacing the usual Mark rewards)
Both TFOs have had their Cooldown Timers temporarily disabled
Review Your Results
Viewing the details of this Event in-game is as simple as opening your Journal and navigating to the “Events” tab. From here, all of the pertinent information is at your fingertips, as are simple-to-use buttons that allow quick access to the associated Content for this Event.
As a core feature of the updated Event System, all Progress Points gained toward completion of the Event are shared across your entire Account, and all earned Progress is automatically tracked and applied toward completing the Event.
Players will be able to earn their Daily Progress once every 20 hours. Either of the above TFOs may be played as much as you like each day, so pick and choose how you prefer to gain Progress each day, and mix it up as much (or as little) as you like!
Event Campaign II
The No Win Scenarios Event will be one of the four Events participating in Event Campaign II. Each day that your Daily Requirement is met, the standard daily allotment of 50 Event Campaign Progress will be applied to your progress toward the completion of the Event Campaign’s Grand Prize.
Rewards
Accruing a total of 14 Days’ worth of Daily Progress will allow you to claim the Grand Prize of this Event. This reward includes all of the following:
Once earned, every character on your account will be able to claim this unique Starship. Freighters come with unique internal amenities and capabilities not found aboard standard starships. Complete details on this Starship’s capabilities are included later in this blog.
Federation Captains (and allies) will gain access to the Kobayashi Maru Freighter, while Klingons (and allies) may earn the Tong’Duj Freighter.
Other characters on your account may visit the “Reclaim Rewards” store interface to pick up their Freighter once you have collected this on any character.
Epic Admiralty Ship – Kobayashi Maru Freighter OR Tong’Duj Freighter
The Admiralty Ships associated with these vessels have been specially upgraded to Epic/Gold quality, and offer bonuses far beyond those of a standard Admiralty Ship of its tier.
3x Featured TFO Reward Boxes
Each gives a choice of 1x Specialization Point or an Enhanced Universal Tech Upgrade
25,000 Dilithium Ore
Issued immediately for use as you see fit!
(Note: The Featured TFO Boxes and Dilithium Ore are only rewarded once, to the first character on your account that claims the Grand Prize.)
Freighters – Rescued and Rewarded
Completion of this Event will grant you the Freighter appropriate to your chosen faction (or allied faction), as well as unlocking the ability for all characters on your account to reclaim the Freighter appropriate to their faction.
Each of these flyable Freighters possess the unique amenities that all Freighters are known for, in addition to an Epic-Quality Admiralty Ship. Commissioning either will also unlock a unique Registry Prefix for characters on your account of the same allegiance – “E.C.S.” for Federation characters and their allies, and “K.C.S.” for Klingons and their allies.
** Some of this ship’s capabilities will scale up until being approximately equivalent with a Tier 4 Starship, and may not match those listed here if commissioned or flown by a Captain below level 30.
This Freighter’s interior has a number of amenities, including a Trade Duty Officer Assignment contact, which is not standard on most starships. Both you and your allies can access the Trader. Also assigned to the Freighter interior is a Quartermaster. The Quartermaster can sell you and your allies commodities at a discounted rate. A similar discount applies when you make any Energy Credit Purchase while onboard your ship (for instance, from Sector Space Freighter Stores). The interior also include access to the Bank, Exchange and Mail, all of which are accessible to you and your allies.
This Freighter has access to a secure subspace channel to call in a Security Transport ship. The Security Transport will allow you to access Prisoner Transfer and Contraband Assignments. The Security Transport is not a combat support vessel, and can only be called when in Sector Space. It is accessible to you and your allies.
Finally, it also comes with a Transwarp Drive that will allow you to access the furthest corners of the quadrant. The Transwarp Drive will allow you to instantly access locations that cannot otherwise be easily transwarped to.
Freighters are not designed as combat vessels. They come with minimal armaments designed only to ward off pirates and other would-be threats.
Note: You can switch to your Freighter from any ship interior. Once you’re done using it, switch back to any ship from the Freighter interior.
Faction: Federation or Klingon (Must Have Primary Allegiance)
After claiming the Grand Prize, you will unlock the option of earning additional Dilithium Ore each day that you continue participating in the content associated with this Event. Each day you earn the Daily Progress you will be automatically granted a bundle of Dilithium Ore.
This bonus reward will begin at 8,000 Dilithium Ore for the first day’s completion, then scales up with each subsequent bonus completion that you achieve. The more you play, the more you continue to earn!
Zen Buyout Option
For players interested in instantly completing this Event – whether that is due to worries over finding the play time to complete it, or simply wanting to move immediately into earning Bonus Rewards – we will be offering a method for buying out.
Within the Event UI, an option will be presented that allows you to purchase the remaining progress that you need, for a scaling amount of Zen. The base price for this service will be 2,000 Zen, but every single Daily Progress that you earn will reduce that price on a percentage basis. Thus, if you have already earned 7 Daily Progress (half of the 14 required), this price will be reduced for you down to 1,000 Zen. The more you play, the cheaper the Buyout Option becomes, dynamically!
A Second Chance
Once this Event has ended, your opportunity to earn Progress Points will have passed. However, the Event System will store the progress that you made long after the Event has expired. Based on this stored progress, the option to Buyout the rewards will remain available through a new “Second Chance” section of the Zen Store. The price for this buyout is the same as what is offered while the Event is active, and scales in the same manner based on your amount of Progress Points accrued.
Legacy Progress
As with previous Events, we will continue offering the opportunity for players to utilize their old Event tokens to apply toward this Event. To access this functionality, select the “Legacy Progress” button on the Event UI. This button will only be visible to players that have tokens available to trade in.
Availability
The No Win Scenarios Event will become available for players on PC starting on June 4th, 2020 and continuing until June 25th, 2020. Players on Xbox One, and Playstation 4 can begin participating on June 30th, 2020 until July 21st, 2020.
